Cook's Helper/Driver

Summary:

Applicant must possess a High School diploma or equivalent. One year experience in food preparation assistance preferred. California Driver’s License with a safe driving record, DMV record required. Must be insurable by the program’s insurance carrier.  Must possess a Food Handler’s Card. Must have current CPR certification that complies with the guidelines set by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation. The ability to follow instructions, serve appropriate food portions, keep simple records, and read and write at a satisfactory level. The cook’s Helper assists in the preparation of cooking, and serving of food and beverages; clean kitchen and dining areas; washes dishes, silverware, pots and pans, deliver meals to patients at various locations, and perform other work as required. This position is funded by a grant . Must be able to work with the Indian community and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepares foods for cooking and assists in cooking and serving foods and beverages for both congregate setting and home delivered meals.

• Arranges dining room furniture; washes and sets tables; clears off tables; fills sugar, salt, and pepper containers and sweeps and mops dining area.
• Washes dishes, silverware, pots and pans; cleans kitchen area; and empties trash and garbage.
• Assists with unpacking and storing food and supplies.
• Cleans and straightens up storage areas, runs errands, cleans restrooms.
• Complies with the California Restaurant Act Regulations.
• Drives corporation vehicles to deliver home meals on the transportation recording sheet and show names of participants who were transported or who received services.
• Cleans the van inside and out on a weekly basis and makes frequent checks of gasoline, oil levels, and tire air pressure.  Takes other precautionary measures as recommended in the Operator’s Manual to assure efficient van operation.
• Works a variable work schedule.
• Other duties as assigned relevant to the position, with relevant training and competency assessment documented.
• This position shall require working on weekends, if needed. The position hours are from 6:30am to 3:15pm Monday through Thursday 6:30am to 2:00pm on Friday.

Education:                            

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:                           

One year experience preferred in food preparation assistance.

License/Certification:     

Must possess a Food Handler’s Card      

Must possess a valid California driver's license and a safe driving record. A current DMV printout is required at time of hire and biannually thereafter. Must be insurable by the Program’s insurance carrier. 

Must have current CPR certification that complies with the guidelines set by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation

Knowledge of:                      

Motor Vehicle Code, vehicle operation; kitchen sanitation and safety measures, food handling sanitation, and the ability to maintain safety procedures.

Skill: 

Ability to listen to instruction and demonstrate competence in the kitchen setting.

Ability to:                              

Work with other staff members in a team effort.  Have empathetic understanding of and willingness to work with elderly Site participants. Take instructions, follow instructions, serve appropriate food portions, keep simple records, and read and write at a satisfactory level. Must be able to work with the Indian Community, and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Physical Demands:               

There may be some carrying of boxes and small equipment weighing 10 to 20 pounds.

Salary Range:                       

$43,680.00 ($21.00)
