POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager - Financial Reporting is responsible for all internal and external monthly, quarterly and annual reporting to Jonah Energy’s bank and investor groups.  Additional key responsibilities include identifying and documenting complex technical accounting issues and ensuring the proper incorporation of the technical accounting conclusions; performing complex analysis of financial results for a given area within the company in comparison to budgets, forecasting, and reporting of such analysis to senior management; and assisting in the preparation of analysis for various external, or internal, audits and work on special projects, as needed, for the Accounting and Finance departments, or for directors/management in other departments. The Manager - Financial Reporting reports directly to the Director Financial Reporting in the Denver office. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a team of direct reports ensuring that all tasks are completed accurately and timely. 
  • Ensure the timely completion of the Company’s Financial Reporting obligations, including monthly, quarterly and annual reporting requirements for banks, stakeholders and investors.
  • Identify, research and document complex technical accounting issues related to Oil and Gas accounting.  Maintain process documentation and narratives.
  • Assist the Treasury Department with completing quarterly and annual debt covenant and compliance certifications.
  • Coordinate annual and interim audit requirements and quarterly reviews, as necessary, and work closely with our external auditors, including preparation of analysis and supporting documentation as requested.
  • Ensure accurate account reconciliations, processes and journal entries involving depletion of our full cost pool, ceiling test limitation analysis, mark-to-market valuations on our derivative instruments, asset retirement obligations, lease accounting, debt issuance cost amortization and G&A accruals.
  • Actively engage in and support the monthly close process involving certain accounting areas such as cash and debt management and G&A accruals by creating or reviewing journal entries, preparing or reviewing accounting reconciliations and rolling forward monthly and quarterly files.
  • Analyze company financial results, and performance metrics, and prepare reports for senior management.  This includes monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc reporting needs for the Accounting department and management.  Develop new analysis and reports or update existing ones based on changes in data or business needs.
  • Assist with gathering and reviewing information for use in the budgeting and forecasting process. 
  • Support special projects and other duties as assigned. This may include system testing, post-implementation reviews and developing new reporting tools or procedures related to existing and new processes, new systems, or system upgrades.
  • Critically evaluate the various inputs for both financial reporting and tax to ensure completeness and accuracy.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Census reporting support.
  • Proactively mitigate risk for the company by documenting business processes (desk manual format).
  • Provide coverage and support for accounting responsibilities during team absences or when additional assistance is needed to meet deadlines. Perform other duties and projects as assigned to support the success of the department and company.

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of direct reports, providing regular feedback and performance evaluations.
  • Delegate tasks effectively and ensure timely completion of team deliverables.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and workload distribution within the team.

  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training of new team members.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting best practices.
  • Experience and expertise in the Oil and Gas industry and associated industry practices.
  • Strong people management experience including leading, coaching and team development to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to solve complex issues.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to exercise sound judgment in evaluating and selecting alternative solutions to complex problems.
  • Excellent prioritization, organization and multi-task skills to beat or meet required deadlines.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Seven to ten years of professional Accounting, preferably experience in the Oil and Gas industry
