Job Title: Preschool Assistant Instructor

Job Status: Part Time – Non-Exempt

Division: Recreation

Primary Work Location: Community Recreation Center

Reports To: Preschool Director/Recreation Services Manager

Available Assistant Schedules:

  • Tuesdays/Thursdays with the 3's Half Day Class
  • Monday-Friday with the 3's Full Day Class
  • Opportunity to be a Substitute Classroom Assistant is also available for these classes

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Essential Job Duties                                                                                                                                       

  • Assist the teacher with daily preparation and cleanup, including checking and maintaining supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Supervise and participate in all classroom activities.
  • Review class activities with the teacher on a daily and weekly basis.
  • Prepare projects and materials in advance, according to the “To Do List” or instructions from the teacher.
  • Establish a positive and nurturing relationship will all children in the program.
  • Inform the teacher of all accidents/ incidents and assist the teacher in completing all necessary forms.
  • Participate in required number of hours of in-service or outside training opportunities as required by the Preschool Director.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Maintain current certification for First Aid and CPR.
  • Performs the job safely and in compliance with Park District policies, procedures, work and safety rules.
  • Attendance/Punctuality – Demonstrate consistent attendance and on-time arrival.
  • Attendance is required for the entirety of the school year, which runs September thru May.
  • Supports and exhibits the established organizational values of respect, communication, integrity, innovation, recognition, continuous learning, fun, empowerment and people.
  • Assist the public and fellow employees in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Attend all preschool staff meetings, open houses, and any other special events when scheduled if directed so by the Preschool Director.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with supervisor, co-workers, and general public.
  • Possess the ability to, under stressful conditions, fulfill job responsibilities and work with residents and staff.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Position Requirements                                                                                                                      

High School Diploma. 10 hours Early Childhood classes and minimum one year experience working with preschool children.

   Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Demonstrate initiative, dependability, good judgment, tact, leadership, and the capability to work in a positive manner with the students, their families, and other Park District staff.
  • Able to operate a computer and use word processing skills
  • Demonstrate consistent attendance and on-time arrival.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak in English.
  • CPR/AED certification or be able to earn within 60 days.

  • Required to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb stairs, twist, talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tool, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to walk on uneven grounds.
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities are required and include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions                                                                                                                                      

  • May be exposed to natural and potentially extreme weather conditions while supervising employees or attending job related activities away from the office.
  • Employee may be exposed to chemicals or other potentially dangerous materials utilized in the manufacturing of arts and crafts, or routine maintenance supplies.
