MEDICAL LABORATORY ASSISTANT

 

JOB TITLE: Medical laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist

HOURS: M-THURS (4 DAY WORK WEEK!!)

LOCATION: Rockville, MD

PAY: $21/hr

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Coordinate and perform tasks and activities in several areas of the clinical laboratory.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to the laboratory Manager

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion and frequent standing and walking short distances. Requires good eye-hand coordination finger dexterity in both hands. Requires vision that is correctable to 20/20 with normal color perception. Requires the ability to hear alarms, instrument/analyzer audible alerts and telephone communications. Requires the ability to effectively communicate both orally and written. Requires the ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to communicable diseases, blood­   borne pathogens, pathogenic bacteria and toxic substances, i.e. acids & bases.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (This list is not inclusive)

  1. Receive sample bags from all locations.
  2. Oversees processing and handling of all patient specimens as they are received in the Laboratory
  3. Verify received labs with logs.
  4. Monitors integrity of patient specimen when receiving labs and reports to lab manager any discrepancies
  5. Monitors supplies and inventory for areas of the lab as directed by the Lab Manager
  6. Researches specimen requirements for reference labs and arranges for critical specimen handling and complex transportation arrangements when needed
  7. Under the supervision and direction of a medical technologist performs test processing in certain areas of the clinical lab
  8. Readily assists other laboratory personnel when requested
  9.  Comply with all laboratory policies and OSHA regulations related to safety and infection control.
  10. Other Duties as Assigned: The assignment of duties to employees is not limited to the content of this job description. Other tasks and assignments may be related to the work usually assigned to the employee, but in some circumstances may be completely unrelated.

 

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with physicians, supervisors, and office staff.
  2. Skill in identifying and resolving technical problems.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  4. Ability to follow written protocols.

 

EDUCATION

At least one year of experience as a phlebotomist

High school or equivalent

 

CERTIFICATION

Certification as a trained phlebotomist

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

 

CMA, RMA, or Phlebotomy Certification

 

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

Two years’ experience in phlebotomy.
