APL Engineered Materials, Inc. manufactures specialty inorganic solid chemicals for use in radiation detection, conventional lighting and critical minerals related applications. We have an exciting opportunity for a Safety Specialist in Urbana, Illinois.

 

Job Summary:

The Safety Coordinator will be responsible for managing safety programs, regulatory reporting, and compliance with federal, state, and local agencies. This position plays a key role in promoting workplace safety and supporting environmental responsibility.

Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Maintain and renew licenses and permits (DEA, DOT Hazardous Materials, Fire System Certifications, Sanitary District, Radioactive Materials, etc.)
  • Manage emergency response and hazmat shipping contracts.
  • Coordinate inspections and certifications with fire marshals, contractors, and outside agencies.
  • Prepare and submit required reports, including OSHA 300, EPA TRI, IEPA Hazardous Waste, IEMA Tier II, and related filings.
  • Create and maintain accounts for EPA, OSHA, IEMA, and IEPA reporting systems.
  • Monitor regulatory updates and ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Maintain employee safety programs, training, and audits.

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills, analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational ability and documentation.
  • Strong safety and continual improvement mentality.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office.

 

 

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in EHS, regulatory compliance, or a related role.
  • CSP or CHMM certification preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, DEA, IEPA, and IEMA regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with online reporting systems and Microsoft Office Suite.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs is necessary.
