Position Summary:
The Lower School Dean of Students works closely with the Head of Lower School to support the administration of the school’s academic and personal development programs. As a professional educator, the Dean of Students understands and responds to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population of young people. The Dean of Students provides proactive, visible leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support each student’s academic achievement and personal and social development. The Dean of Students advocates and cultivates core values that enhance high expectations, equity, inclusiveness, and social justice and that contribute directly to supporting a positive school climate.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Administrative Support
- Partner with faculty, families, and administrators to foster a positive school culture and learning environment.
- Support new and veteran teachers in classroom management and school-wide expectations through mentoring, observations, and coaching.
- Represent the Head of Lower School when needed and assist with faculty hiring processes.
Student Support & Behavioral Development
- Collaborate on proactive student behavior and support systems alongside counselors and support teams.
- Lead disciplinary processes in alignment with school values and policies.
- Serve on the Lower School Student Support Team and coordinate with faculty on student interventions and support plans.
- Participate in divisional dean meetings to ensure consistent implementation of policies.
- Contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as a Equity and Justice Committee member.
Operations & Safety
- Oversee student arrival and dismissal procedures, ensuring safety and efficiency in collaboration with faculty and staff.
- Coordinate safety drills and emergency protocols with the Director of Safety and Security.
- Support campus operations, including visitor management, student transitions, and after-school enrichment programming.
Scheduling & Events
- Collaborate on the development of the LS master schedule with academic leaders.
- Create and manage duty rosters and special event schedules throughout the year.
- Support school-wide and divisional events, such as performances and community gatherings.
Admissions & Student Placement
- Participate in the admissions process by reviewing applications and contributing to decision-making for PK4–Grade 5 applicants.
- Lead the classroom placement process in partnership with faculty and leadership.
Additional Responsibilities
- Serve on the Committee on Ethics and Compliance (C.E.C.) to review and recommend responses to conduct-related matters.
- Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Head of Lower School.
