Position Summary:

The Junior Underwriter supports the underwriting team by performing preliminary analysis and review of mortgage loan files. This position is intended for individuals transitioning from a processing role, with the goal of developing into a fully delegated underwriter. The Junior Underwriter will work under close supervision and follow established guidelines to assist in risk assessment, compliance, and eligibility determinations for residential loan products.

Remote position within the state of Texas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Underwriting Review: Assist senior underwriters in reviewing and analyzing mortgage loan files to ensure compliance with investor guidelines and company standards.
  • File Evaluation: Perform preliminary evaluation of loan applications, credit reports, income documentation, and asset statements.
  • Condition Clearance: Review and clear underwriting conditions set by a Senior Underwriter, ensuring all documentation satisfies investor and company requirements prior to final approval or closing.
  • Scenario Desk Support: Provide scenario-based guidance to loan originators and processors regarding loan structuring and eligibility based on investor and program guidelines.
  • Post-Closing Reconciliation: Assist with investor post-closing audits and reconcile underwriting conditions or documentation discrepancies as needed to facilitate loan sale and purchase.
  • Communication & Coordination: Collaborate with processors, loan officers, and closing/post-closing teams to ensure smooth workflow and accurate documentation.
  • Operations Support: Provide general support to mortgage operations, including quality control preparation, compliance checks, and assisting with pipeline management activities.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions and ensure all documentation meets internal policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Ongoing Learning: Stay current on investor guidelines, industry changes, and compliance requirements.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Secondary Market Mortgage Processor.
  • Extensive knowledge of government, conventional, Jumbo, and Non-QM loan programs (Non-QM experience preferred).
  • Familiarity with AUS systems (DU, LP) and secondary market investor guidelines.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with underwriting and loan origination systems.
  • Prior exposure to post-closing or investor delivery processes.
  • Interest and aptitude for advancement into a full underwriter or mortgage operations leadership role.
