We are looking for a Communications & Marketing Intern who is passionate about using their skills to help share impactful stories, support outreach efforts, and promote our programs to the broader community.

Summary

AbilityFirst’s Internship program is a unique opportunity for current participants at our sights to gain real-world experience within the Communications Department.

This internship is a great opportunity for a motivated college student pursuing a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field. to gain practical experience in a dynamic nonprofit setting. Interns will work directly with the Marketing and Communications Manager and communications staff to support storytelling, content creation, and community engagement initiatives. 

Ideal candidates will be self-motivated, hard-working, and creative. They will demonstrate a professional demeanor, work well with others, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.

Interns are expected to be able to commute to the various AbilityFirst Locations.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Assist in drafting and editing content for social media, newsletters, blog posts, press releases, and website updates
  • Help collect, organize, and share participant stories in a respectful and impactful way
  • Support the coordination and promotion of events and campaigns
  • Assist with internal and external communications, including emails and outreach materials
  • Take and organize photos or videos from events and activities (as permitted)
  • Help maintain consistent branding and messaging across all platforms
  • Conduct research on communications strategies, media trends, and outreach best practices
  • Provide administrative support to the communications and development teams as needed
  • Maintain organized digital files of media assets and communications materials
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the mission of the program and organization

Qualifications

BACKGROUND YOU’LL NEED: 

  • Must be currently attending a university or college while pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree to be considered for the position. This a requirement.
  • Must have a Valid Driver’s License or State ID is required.
  • Must be at least 18-24 years of age is required. 
  • An interest in Communications or Marketing is preferred.
  • Familiarity with or interest in design software like, but not limited to, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or Affinity; CRMs such as Constant Contact or Mailchimp; and platforms like Hootsuite is a plus is preferred.
  • Comfortable working with diverse communities and passionate about accessibility and inclusion is required.
  • Familiar with AbilityFirst and the services received at any of our sites is a plus. 
  • Willingness to work with folks of diverse experiences and backgrounds

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Changes in the environment, such as the office or outdoors.
  • Physical effort/lifting, such as sedentary- up to 15-20 pounds at times.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

Mandated Reporting Requirements: The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

 

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements: Effective August 9, 2021, the State Health Officer has mandated that all workers, paid or unpaid, in homeless services organizations must provide proof of vaccination. If eligible for a booster shot, proof of booster is also required. If not fully vaccinated, weekly COVID-19 testing is necessary depending on the program.
