Summary Of Role 

The Senior Systems Administrator is a key member of the IT team, responsible for overseeing and enhancing the organization’s IT infrastructure and operational integrity. This role leads the day-to-day IT systems and network operations, ensuring optimal performance, security, and scalability. The Senior Systems Administrator develops and implements IT strategies aligned with business goals and collaborates with internal stakeholders and external partners to deliver robust, reliable technology solutions. In addition to hands-on technical responsibilities, this role provides strategic oversight, process optimization, compliance assurance, and mentorship to junior IT staff. The position is also instrumental in shaping technology policy, disaster recovery planning, security posture, and long-term infrastructure planning. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Infrastructure Leadership & Management; Lead the planning, deployment, monitoring, and optimization of IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, storage systems, and endpoint devices. Develop and enforce standards, policies, and procedures to ensure system reliability, performance, and security. 

  • Strategic Operations Oversight: Serve as a primary escalation point for complex system and network issues. Manage and continuously improve IT operations, including proactive system monitoring, patch management, backup integrity, performance tuning, and incident resolution. 

  • Vendor & Service Provider Management; Oversee relationships with outsourced IT service providers (ITSPs) and key vendors. Evaluate vendor performance, negotiate contracts and SLAs, and ensure service delivery meets organizational expectations and compliance requirements. 

  • Security and Compliance Oversight; Coordinate and evaluate regular vulnerability assessments, penetration tests, and social engineering audits. Lead follow-up remediation efforts and provide executive-level reporting. Ensure compliance with industry regulations including BSA, Patriot Act, OFAC, and internal IT governance policies. 

  • Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity; Own the Technology Services Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity planning and execution. Lead annual testing, document outcomes, and implement improvements. Ensure organizational preparedness and rapid recovery capabilities. 

  • Technology Lifecycle & Asset Management; Maintain a comprehensive hardware and software asset inventory. Oversee procurement planning, end-of-life management, and licensing compliance. Evaluate and recommend technology upgrades aligned with organizational growth and modernization goals. 

  • Systems Administration & Automation; Lead advanced administration of Windows servers, Active Directory, Office 365, and virtualization platforms. Design and implement automation scripts and tools to increase efficiency and reduce manual tasks. 

  • Team Leadership & Mentorship; Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to junior IT team members. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence. Act as a subject matter expert and resource across departments. 

  • Budget Planning & Cost Control; Collaborate with the VP of Information Technology Operations to develop and manage IT budgets. Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining performance and reliability. 

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration; Work with business units to identify technology needs and deliver solutions that support operational efficiency and innovation. Translate business requirements into technical specifications and project plans. 

  • Other Duties; Perform additional duties as assigned by the VP of Information Technology Operations or executive leadership. 

Knowledge & Skills 

Experience 

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in IT infrastructure, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead role 

Education/Certifications/Licenses 

  • A high school degree or GED is required. CompTia A+ certificate is desired Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), or Cisco CCNA highly desired. 

Interpersonal Skills 

A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required to be an effective subject matter expert in the position. In-depth dialogues, conversations and explanations with customers, direct and indirect reports and outside vendors of a sensitive and/or highly confidential nature is a normal part of the day-to-day experience. Communications can involve motivating, influencing, educating and/or advising others on matters of significance.

Physical Requirements 

Is able to bend, sit, and stand in order to perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, copiers, facsimiles, and calculators. Must be able to routinely perform work on a computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours or travel off site whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance. 

Working Conditions 

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise. 

Mental and/or Emotional Requirements 

Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to complete basic mathematical calculations, spell accurately, and understand computer basics. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace.  Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising the highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
