Description

Summary: We are seeking an experienced ratemaking or reserving actuary to oversee daily operations of the actuarial team, assist with quarterly and annual reserving analysis, and lead new product launches. The ideal candidate will have experience with predictive modeling, product design, ratemaking or reserving. 

 

Preference for candidates based in Fargo or Minneapolis, though remote arrangements with regular office travel will be considered.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • People Management: 
    • Oversee daily operations of actuarial staff, ensuring all analysis and reporting is completed on time and with high quality. 
    • Drive continued development of actuarial staff through work experience and exam support. 
    • Lead recruiting process, including proactively identifying when staffing needs change. 
  • Ratemaking: 
    • Develop rate indications and proposals for review by rate committee for all lines of business, including supplemental analysis of competitor rates and ISO filings. 
    • Lead development of predictive modeling function within the actuarial department or through consultants (prior experience permitting).
    • Lead development of rating algorithm and endorsement pricing for new product roll-outs (prior experience permitting)
    • Oversee filing creation process, including final sign-off for filing submission and being the primary representative for department of insurance communications. 
  • Reserving: 
    • Ensure analysts accountable for quarterly and annual reserve processes are on track during close processes, including satisfying SOX controls and generating external reports. Work with accounting on schedule for the next close. 
    • Complete quarterly reserving analysis for select companies and lines, including developing summary materials and presenting to the reserve committee as assigned. 
    • Peer review selections and write-ups for other actuaries with reserving accountabilities.
    • Perform ad hoc intra-quarter analysis in support of finance and/or claims as needed.
  • Additional Accountabilities: 
    • Support annual reinsurance placement through data calls and review of broker analysis. 
    • Support MPCI and Crop Hail strategy, including data analysis and filing support. 
    • Support broader product strategy, including assessment of new product needs and opportunities. 
    • Maintain develop databases in support of actuarial team needs. 
    • Perform ad hoc analysis as requested by other departments (claims, underwriting, etc.).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications 

  • Ten or more years of P&C insurance pricing or reserving experience. 
  • Fellow or Associate of the Casualty Actuary Society. 
  • Ability to communicate actuarial concepts to a non-actuarial audience. 
  • Experience leading a team, with demonstrated organization and time management skills. 
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel. 
  • Occasional travel depending on location (10%-15%). 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Significant experience with Personal Auto, Farmowners, Homeowners, or BOP.
  • Experience with SQL, R, or Python. 
  • Experience with Predictive Modeling or Product Design.
