REQUIRED EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:  

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in education, Special Education, or other related fields.  

  • Be eligible or currently possess a Provisional or Full Virginia Teaching License in  

  • Special Education (general curriculum or other categories), or other licensed areas.   

  • Experience leading classroom instruction of school-aged (K-12) students with  

  • disabilities.  

  

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE: 

The special education teacher is the classroom instructional leader of a team of staff and classroom of students. This role is responsible for developing grade level lesson plans and implementing daily academics for a class of no more than 10 students. The ability to lead and manage staff, provide academic oversight and supervision, provide direct academic instruction, and maintain a professional demeanor at all times is critical for this position. 

 

This position will also collaborate with school divisions and other service providers as needed. This position will create the academic plan for the classroom and each student based on Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs or ASOLs) and follow appropriate pacing and sequencing to meet the standards. The teacher follows all strategies and interventions designed by the BCBA, Assistant Principal, Principal, or IEP Administrator to address challenging student behaviors or help with skill acquisition challenges. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  

  • Design coherent instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals. 

  • Plans instruction to achieve desired IEP goals and objectives and objectives that reflect the Virginia Standards of Learning. 

  • Assess individual, group, and program needs and select appropriate materials and resources to match the abilities and needs of all students. 

  • Uses a variety of assessment strategies and instruments to make both short-term and long-term instructional decisions to improve student learning. 

  • Identifies and communicates specific student performance expectations and documents student learning gains using appropriate assessment instruments. 

  • Understands how students differ in their approaches to learning and is able to differentiate instruction to meet diverse students’ needs.  

  • Uses comprehensive materials, technology, and resources that promote the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills. 

  • Selects, evaluates, and refines a variety of teaching methods and instructional strategies for the active engagement and improvement of student learning. 

  • Actively implements a discipline policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for students and staff. 

  • Manages classroom procedures to maximize academic learning time.  

  • Establishes and maintains rapport with students.  

  • Creates a supportive learning environment for all students that encourages social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. 

  • Uses effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster positive interactions in the classroom. 

  • Develops partnerships with families to promote student learning at home and in the school. 

  • Works collaboratively with staff, families, and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population. 

  • Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions. 

  • Takes responsibility for and participates in a meaningful and continuous process of professional development that results in the enhancement of student learning.
