Description

The Weld Inspector is responsible for inspecting and testing welded joints of work in progress and completed units for defects, correct dimensions, strength, weld penetration and conformance. The Weld Inspector is also responsible for performing welding duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and test welded joints of work in progress and completed units for visible defects, correct dimensions, joint strength, bead formation, weld penetration, and conformance with layouts, blueprints, work order specifications, and applicable codes or company policies.
  • Apply knowledge of welding principles and metallurgical properties to detect flaws such as cracks, cold welds, spatter, and undercuts using tools like flashlights or magnifying glasses. This includes inspecting both manual and robotic welding.
  • Verify cleaning, prepping, and painting procedures are followed and meet quality standards.
  • Conduct stress testing on joints using applicable equipment or prepare and review test samples.
  • Verify product alignment and dimensions; set up machines and fixtures for work in progress; complete first article inspections per company policy.
  • Observe welders' techniques and performance in the weld shop to ensure adherence to standards.
  • Mark defective pieces and recommend appropriate rework or scrapping procedures.
  • Record inspection data and report findings to the Weld Shop Manager.
  • Perform and assist in coordinating weld tests in accordance with the company’s weld certification program.
  • Maintain all required welding certifications: AWS D1.1, CWB S-Class, AWS-TKY, and CWB Certified Weld Supervisor for W47.1.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment according to CWB-recommended parameters.
  • Use a variety of power and hand tools to grind or chip off excess slag or spatter.
  • Use E10 software proficiently to process inspected and completed parts, and follow all company procedures related to data entry and documentation.
  • Share safety responsibility with the departmental manager; ensure all safety rules and procedures are followed. Report any safety concerns.
  • Document and notify the Weld Shop Manager of quality issues, including written descriptions, photos, employee name/number, and recommended repair procedures.
  • Notify the Weld Shop Manager and/or Maintenance of equipment issues, and communicate blueprint or design changes to appropriate departments, always including the Weld Manager in these updates.
  • Report any quality, safety, or production issues to the Weld Manager immediately.
  • Collaborate with the Weld Manager to ensure efficient workflow and achieve goals for quality, volume, and efficiency.
  • Remain flexible with duties; assisting team members in tasks such as tacking, welding, painting, material handling, pipe rolling, etc.
  • Be a team player and role model. Promote a positive work atmosphere focused on cooperation, productivity, and the strategic plan.
  • Assist with employee training and serve as a mentor when directed by management.
  • Keep the work area clean and organized; support others in maintaining shop cleanliness.
  • Understand that Senior Management or the Weld Manager may adjust work hours based on business needs or workflow demands.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

  • Maintain welding certifications in accordance with our welding certification program: AWS D1.1, CWB S class, AWS-TKY. Weld Inspectors must always keep their AWS certified weld inspector certifications current according to AWS standards and their CWB certified weld supervisor certification for W47.1
  • Know the welding processes including our welding certification process.
  • Read and comprehend engineered drawings, blueprints, specifications, policies and procedures, work order specifications, and code books.
  • Be professional and cordial to all team members at all times; take direction and constructive criticism well from management; display a positive attitude and be a team player; use strong communication skills, especially interpersonal skills; handle the position under time constraints and stress.
  • Ensure tasks are executed in the most effective manner in regards to time, cost and function and perform work at a high standard level - maintain strong quality control in the welding department.
  • Interpret
  • Safely use hand grinders, hammers, chisels, chippers, punches, torches, hand plaz, welding machines, forklifts, calipers, micrometers or any other weld measuring tools, band saws, chop saws, forklift
  • Strive for ongoing self-improvement through training, classes, advanced welding techniques, and other appropriate training.
  • Have computer experience.

Mathematical Skills: Use basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and any other calculations as it pertains to a certified weld inspector.
