POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Associate Dean of Students - Student Wellness, Assistant Dean of Career Services, Manager of Campus Recreation, Writing Center Director

 

JOB SUMMARY:    The Dean of Students provides management, vision, and leadership for all student affairs programs and services to the University.  The Dean is responsible for the day-to-day management of the following services or areas: Career Development, Wellness Center, Testing Services, Student Tutoring, Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Life, New Student Orientation, Clubs and Organizations, Student Doctor’s Council, and Disability Services.  The Dean serves on the Enrollment Management Leadership Team and is responsible for leading strategic planning efforts to empower students to develop knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to maximize their own potential in a way that supports academic success, professional growth, and development.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

  1. Provides strategic leadership, management, and accountability for all activities, operations, communications, and the fiscal integrity of all programs administered by the Dean of Students’ Office.
  2. Provides supervision and support for director-level staff administering complex, student-oriented services.
  3. Administers and manages new student orientation programs.
  4. Provides guidance, expertise, and management on matters related to the Student Code of Conduct, student rights and responsibilities, the process of adjudication, and alternative dispute resolution.
  5. Responsible for disciplinary process and procedures rendered by Student Conduct Committee hearings.  Review, update, and implement the Student Code of Conduct in collaboration with appropriate faculty, staff, and students.
  6. Engages in unit, division, and university strategic planning efforts, participating in programs and processes designed to enhance student support and the overall student experience.

 

  1. Represents student safety and wellness needs to university leaders and stakeholders.
  2. Works closely with students to identify needs and implement potential solutions to individual and community-level issues.
  3. Works with the academic deans, directors, faculty, and staff to identify and intervene with students experiencing academic and personal difficulties.
  4. Establishes and implements short- and long-term department goals, objectives, policies, budgets, and operating procedures.
  5. Oversees and performs department/program assessments and evaluations to determine effectiveness, and implements corrective action as required for improvement.
  6. Ensures services offered are effective, cohesive, and consistent with the needs and objectives of the diverse student population.
  7. Establishes and maintains staffing and an organizational structure to effectively accomplish the department's function; recruits, employs, trains, supervises, and evaluates department staff.
  8. Develops and maintains key collaborative relationships with campus administrative areas, faculty, and campus and community leaders to enhance planning and implementation of strategic initiatives, resolve issues, and provide support to students and the community in response to incidents and urgent matters.
  9. Provides direction, intervention, and prevention for students in need, including intervening in collaboration with mental health staff, providing student advocacy, and working with staff and students affected by crisis; serves in an on-call capacity; identifies and implements interventions in the best interest of students and the university community.
  10. Engages with empirical research and established best practices to design and advance a high-quality and equitable student experience at the university.
  11. Provides training and information to students, faculty, staff, parents, and external stakeholders regarding student wellbeing, resources, rights, responsibilities, and overall experience.
  12. Recommends and participates in the development of university policies and procedures for students; serves on university planning and policy-making committees.
  13. Other duties as assigned that support the overall strategic efforts of Logan University. Must be able to occasionally work evenings and weekends, and periodic travel for conferences, meetings, and/or events.  

Qualifications

COMPETENCIES:  To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate excellent leadership management skills and the ability to manage project team activities.  Must have excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills, as well as an effective team-oriented leader. Knowledge of current issues in student affairs and the ability to improve student experience, satisfaction, and retention are essential.     

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Dean of Students will have a minimum of a master’s degree in a related academic discipline and at least 7 years of relevant experience in Student Affairs in a higher education environment.  They will have a successful record of management, budgeting, planning, and development of student programming.  A terminal degree is preferred.

The successful candidate will have thorough knowledge of current practices and theories in student affairs, outstanding writing and presentation skills, sound decision-making, analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and a strong commitment to student advocacy, quality service, inclusiveness, collaboration to ensure the optimal student experience.

 

Computer skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have demonstrated competence with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).  

 

Other Skills and Abilities: Familiarity with chiropractic, PA, and other health sciences disciplines; basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
