Fragrance Formulator

Position Summary
The Perfumer is responsible for designing, modifying, and optimizing fragrance blends for a diverse portfolio of cosmetic and personal care products manufactured for third-party brands. This role combines creative formulation skills with scientific expertise to ensure that fragrances are innovative, stable, cost-effective, and compliant with all regulatory standards. The Perfumer works closely with internal teams and external clients to deliver high-quality, market-ready scent solutions that align with customer briefs and industry trends.


Responsibilities and Essential Duties

  • Formulate and adjust fragrances to meet client briefs for various cosmetic applications (e.g., body washes, lotions, creams, shampoos, soaps).
  • Ensure fragrance performance, stability, and compatibility within different product bases and packaging.
  • Conduct olfactory evaluations, chemical analyses, and stability testing throughout the development process.
  • Select and assess raw materials, ensuring quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Submit fragrance samples for review and revise formulations based on client feedback and application testing.
  • Work closely with R&I formulation chemists and collaborate with cross-functional teams (process engineers, sales, QC) to ensure timely project delivery and successful product launches.
  • Document fragrance formulas and production processes to ensure reproducibility and batch consistency.
  • Perform and document analytical testing procedures, including GC/MS and IR spectroscopy, to validate fragrance quality and stability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve quality control issues related to fragrance performance in finished products.
  • Stay current on fragrance trends, new raw materials, and regulatory changes relevant to the cosmetic industry.
  • Build and maintain a fragrance library for future projects and proactive client proposals.
  • Support staff training in fragrance formulation and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
  • Completes and documents required training based on job position as illustrated by LMS and training matrix.

Qualifications

Technical Skills Required

  • Strong knowledge of fragrance chemistry, formulation, and regulatory requirements (e.g., IFRA, REACH).
  • Understanding of Packaging Compatibility and how it relates to products.
  • In depth understand of Good Document Practices and how they relate to GLP and GMP.
  • Functional knowledge of common processing equipment. 
  • Proficiency in analytical techniques such as GC/MS and familiarity with stability and compatibility testing.
  • Ability to interpret data to create formula specifications for Operations and Quality.
  • Understanding of Safety Data Sheets and how to evaluate raw materials and formulas for safety.
  • Efficient in MS-Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work as a team player.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, or a related field.
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience as a perfumer or fragrance formulator, preferably in a contract manufacturing or fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to climb stairs, stand for periods of time and have the ability to bend, squat, kneel, turn, and stoop.Requires some walking, as well a sitting for periods of time
  • Physically able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent exposure to varying temperatures, loud noises, heavy machinery, fumes, or airborne particles, electrical, chemicals and moving parts.
  • Occasional use of computer screen.
  •  Must be able to discern differences in color.
