Program Description: The Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) is a non-profit, multi-service organization focusing primarily on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth, and aging New Yorkers. We operate at community centers located in the neighborhoods of East Harlem and Yorkville and seek to deliver programs that are impactful, innovative, and intergenerational.

 

Position Summary: The Isaacs Center is seeking a highly motivated candidate to serve as the Manager of Academic Services within the Education and Workforce Development division. Reporting to the Director of Advance and Earn is primarily responsible for oversight and leadership of academic services for young adults (17–24 years of age) who are disconnected from traditional learning environments and are unemployed or underemployed. Through the provision of literacy and numeracy classes, pre-high school equivalency and high school equivalency preparation, and college readiness supports, participants will enter or re-enter the workforce and pursue educational opportunities that boost their hourly wage earnings and put them on a sustainable career path.

 

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, 11am-7pm

 

Salary Range: $64,350 - $70,000

 

Candidates must have the required qualifications to be considered for the position. The salary offer will be based on the candidate’s number of years experience in the exact or comparable position and additional preferred qualifications will be taken into account. 

Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

Role, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

1.) Program Oversight and Leadership (45%)

  • Provide oversight and leadership for Pre-High, High School Equivalency, and college readiness/placement/transition programs for participants.

  • Coordinate recruitment, enrollment, assessment, testing, and retention efforts with the academic support team staff.

  • Use visual and digital instruction and data platforms to plan, design, and implement initiatives, action plans, and goals in collaboration with instructional staff, career development teams, and supportive services.

  • Supervise, observe, and motivate academic staff members (teachers and instructors).

  • Recruit, train, and evaluate staff, interns, and volunteers to ensure knowledge of data management systems such as Salesforce and DYCD Connect within the program.

  • Create a supportive, inclusive, and teamwork-oriented climate and culture to enhance student achievement and staff engagement.

  • Promote best practices in youth development, differentiated visual and digital instruction, crisis intervention, and classroom behavior management.

  • Collaborate with instructional staff and other stakeholders to address challenges and enhance program effectiveness through data analysis processes.


2.) Participant Advising and Support (30%)

In collaboration with the instructional team:

  • Meet individually with participants weekly to review their goals, program progress, and post-secondary plans.

  • Assess students’ academic levels and readiness for GED testing through diagnostic tools, and develop individualized learning plans leading to GED attainment.

  • Provide motivation, encouragement, and strategies to overcome barriers to success both internally and externally.

  • Offer guidance on study habits, time management, tutoring support services, educational workshops, and online materials to address specific challenges, including test-taking techniques and strategies.

  • Guide and coach students through GED exam registration and TABE testing processes, ensuring familiarity with testing procedures.

  • Work closely with the Career and Alumni Services (CASH) team to support students in exploring and pursuing postsecondary education or career opportunities such as vocational programs, college admissions, and financial aid options.

  • Collaborate with the Employment Specialist for Education and Workforce Development for internship and placement opportunities.


3.) Partnership Development (10%)

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with community members, external partners, and educational institutions to support program growth and success.

  • Collaborate with Isaacs/Goddard Riverside programs to expand resources available to participants.


4.) Data Management and Analysis (10%)

  • Oversee and manage academic data while ensuring compliance with confidentiality guidelines and grant/budget deadlines.

  • Analyze data to improve student performance and ensure successful completion rates for program participants.

  • Maintain detailed records of test scores, student progress reports, attendance rates, and overall program performance.


5.) Budget Development and Management (5%)

  • Manage program budgets in coordination with central administrative functions and the Director of Advance and Earn to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.


Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education or a related field preferred.

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of program management experience in an education setting within a community-based organization.


Experience

  • Proven managerial experience in supervising staff and developing strategies to improve student success and program outcomes.

  • Strong background in data tracking, collection, analysis, and management.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of youth development principles and engagement strategies for individuals aged 17–24.

  • Experience in standardized testing processes, including GED or High School Equivalency exams.

  • Proficiency in administrative tools and software for managing student data and performance (e.g., Microsoft Excel, database systems).

  • Knowledge of community resources supporting participants’ non-academic needs (childcare, transportation, food assistance, housing).

  • Familiarity with financial aid and college admissions processes.

General Knowledge:

  • Adult education pedagogy and techniques for teaching literacy, numeracy, and pre-GED/HSE subjects.

  • Academic advising and individualized student learning plan development.

  • Principles of program coordination within community-based or education-focused organizations.

  • Workforce development programming, including job readiness and vocational training.

  • Data collection, reporting systems, and confidentiality guidelines.

Thorough Knowledge:

  • Advanced understanding of GED testing criteria, standards, and curriculum design for high school equivalency preparation.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication, networking, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Best practices in behavior management and creating inclusive classroom environments.

  • Techniques for building and maintaining community partnerships with external organizations and institutions.

  • Proficiency in data analysis for tracking performance and improving program delivery.

  • Budget development, financial tracking, and compliance with funding regulations.

Comprehensive Knowledge:

  • Advanced understanding of GED testing criteria, standards, and curriculum design.

  • Best practices in behavior management and creating inclusive learning environments for students with varying abilities.

  • Techniques for developing and maintaining external partnerships.

  • Proficiency in performance-based data analysis to enhance program effectiveness.

  • Mastery in budget development, financial tracking, and compliance with grant/contract expectations.


Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Work primarily performed in a community center or educational setting with standard office and classroom conditions.

  • Noise levels may vary during student interactions or group activities.

  • Occasional visits to partner organizations, off-site events, or community locations.

  • Some evenings and weekends required for events or program needs.

  • Must work collaboratively in a team setting and remain accessible throughout the day.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Bilingual or bicultural skills desirable but not required.
