JOB TITLE: Assistant Carpenter
REPORTS TO: Technical Director
FLSA Status: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt
COMPENSATION RATE: $30.95 per hour
UNION: IATSE Local 2 
LOCATION: 363 W Pershing Rd., Chicago, IL 60609 

 

POSITION SUMMARY:  
The Goodman Theatre is searching for an Assistant Carpenter to join our scene shop.  The Assistant Carpenter will work collaboratively with the Technical Director and other scene shop members to construct, load-in, maintain and load-out scenery for the 8-show subscription season, including our annual production of A Christmas Carol, our annual New Stages Festival and more at the Goodman Theatre. This position can require some evening and weekend hours on an as needed basis. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Construct scenery as specified by technical or designer drawings
  • Collaborate with TD staff and other shop staff to provide creative problem solving, construction methods and implementation
  • Work all load out, load in and tech note calls as scheduled by the TD staff
  • Uphold Goodman Theatre quality and construction standards
  • Help to maintain a safe and sanitary scene shop, loading dock and backstage area
  • Oversee small crews during load in and load outs
  • Close and lock up the scene shop at the end of the day following the established lockup procedure as needed
  • Receive shipments delivered to the shop
  • Inform supervisors when materials, hardware or expendables are low and need to be replaced/restocked or when equipment needs to be repaired
  • Proper use and care of all Goodman tools, equipment and facilities
  • Drive shop van and rental straight truck for a variety of tasks including but not limited to; deliveries, drop-offs, and more.
  • Operate the CNC router and perform routine maintenance tasks as assigned
  • Assist with the delivery/removal of semi-trailers from the theatre loading dock
  • Other duties as assigned 

 
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: 

  • At least 3 years professional theatre experience in scenery construction; scenic carpentry, finish carpentry, metal working, stage rigging, and automation/motion control  
  • Knowledge of theatrical procedures used in scenic construction  
  • Ability to repeatedly lift, push or maneuver 50-70lbs, either alone or with assistance from others as well as scale ladders and work at heights
  • Safely operate a forklift and/or safely drive a 24’ box truck is beneficial 
  • Work collaboratively as a team member and maintain a positive attitude
  • Valid driver’s license required
