The Principal IoT Security Architect position resides in the Security and Privacy Technologies department at CableLabs. The CableLabs Security and Privacy Technologies team drives innovation toward a unified threat-resistant networking environment for both wired and mobile experiences. We research, develop, publish, improve, and influence tools and standards to advance security and privacy. We develop new controls to keep our industry ahead of threats and adversaries on the network. We develop communities that evangelize and foster collaboration, dissemination of knowledge, best practices, and training. In doing so, this team is critical in all CableLabs projects, but more than that, we are foundational to the projects and technologies in an entire industry – when people ask you what you do at work, you can tell them that you keep them safe online.

 

Why This Role Is Exciting

The Principal IoT Security Architect is a deeply technical implementation role responsible for incorporating security by design into technologies for an entire industry. This role conducts research on established as well as emerging security technologies and identifies how they can be incorporated into various Network and IoT related technologies. You will collaborate across a variety of partners, including product owners, legal, and security experts, to deliver security solutions to industry adoption.  This role has significant standards body interaction; the ideal candidate will represent an entire industry, so the candidate must be professional and have the persuasion, influence, and technical skills to convince other experts in the field to adopt new techniques.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Develops specifications, technical requirements and algorithms for future products and applications.
  • Determines the technical requirements for an application or platform. Leads the design and implementation of applications and platforms within a specific area of research, partnering with the product team and other stakeholders through development. Conducts studies to support product or application development.
  • Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.
  • Tests and evaluates solutions presented to the Company by various internal and external partners and vendors. Completes case studies, testing and reporting.
  • Crafts prototypes and contributes to studies to support product or application development.
  • Organizes and maintains resources. Researches, writes, and edits documentation and technical requirements, including evaluation plans, confluence pages, white papers, presentations, test results, technical manuals, formal recommendations, and reports. Contributes to the company by crafting patents, API's and other intellectual property. Presents papers and attends conferences.
  • Collaborates with teams outside of immediate work group. Represents the work team in providing solutions to technical issues associated with assigned projects.
  • Provides mentorship and leadership to more junior researchers. Collaborates within and across teams. Deciphers tasks into functional components.
  • Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance. The Principal level is one where we have expectations of your professional freedom, but also responsibility – we don’t expect to need to manage your day-to-day work but rather to find targets together and work with you to achieve those goals.

Qualifications

What Is a Must Have

  • Detailed knowledge of various security related technologies and protocols like TLS/DTLS, EAP methods, OAuth, PAKE methods, Zero Knowledge Proof methods
  • Detailed understanding of network stack and network protocols like DNS/mDNS, DHCP, NDP, UDP/TCP/QUIC, COAP, IEEE 802.3/VLAN/VxLAN
  • Experience in developing distributed network architectures including specifying data models using one or more of YANG, Protobuf, TLV’s, JOSE, BBF TR-181, SNMP
  • Understanding of 802.11/Wi-Fi protocols and WPA2/WPA3 authentication mechanisms
  • Experience in at least one of the following: Python, JavaScript, Rust, C, C++, Go. This is a development focused role, you should be able to code and lead a team of software developers and be proficient in the use of Git and other continuous software development tools.
  • Outstanding soft skills. Security is a team sport!
  • 6-10 years of engineering experience with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer/software/cybersecurity/privacy engineering

 

What Will Set You Apart

  • Standards body experience, particularly leadership roles in larger SDOs
  • Familiarity with IoT related standards like Matter, Thread etc
  • Familiarity with IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.11 protocols
  • 4+ years of proven experience for MS, 2+ years of postdoctoral or industry experience for PhD.

Compensation: The salary range is $178,875 - $230,125. This position is eligible for bonus incentive compensation up to 25% of base salary.

Working conditions and physical requirements

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. This position requires travel up to 20% of the time.
