Job Purpose/Objective

The Routing Planner is responsible for the daily creation, optimization, and execution of delivery routes using routing technology platforms (Omnitracs Roadnet, Omnitracs Routing, and Omnitracs Dispatch). This role executes tactical route planning while monitoring real-time performance, managing last-minute changes, and ensuring on-time delivery to customers. The Routing Planner reports directly to the Routing Manager and serves as a key liaison between dispatch, drivers, and operations teams.

II. Essential Job Functions

  1. Daily Route Creation & Optimization
    • Build and optimize daily delivery routes using Omnitracs Roadnet and routing platforms
    • Apply route optimization to balance stop sequencing, drive times, customer time windows, and vehicle capacity
    • Incorporate business rules, customer requirements, and driver capabilities into route planning
    • Utilize telematics data to make informed routing decisions based on traffic patterns and historical performance
  2. Real-Time Exception Management
    • Monitor routes throughout the day using real-time tracking and ETA tools
    • Respond to delivery exceptions including traffic delays, vehicle breakdowns, and customer requests
    • Add last-minute orders and adjust routes dynamically to accommodate changing customer demands
    • Communicate route changes promptly to drivers and dispatch teams using easy-to-use communication tools
  3. Communication & Coordination
    • Distribute dispatch routing and related information to drivers and department representatives in an accurate and timely manner
    • Maintain clear communication between drivers and back-office teams throughout the delivery day
    • Provide regular updates on route progress, delays, and customer service issues to the Routing Manager
    • Coordinate with Sales, Shipping, and Transportation departments to align routing with operational needs
  4. Performance Monitoring & Reporting
    • Track and analyze key performance metrics including on-time delivery rates, fuel efficiency, and route adherence
    • Analyze data and events from past deliveries to identify patterns and improvement opportunities
    • Generate daily routing reports and performance summaries for management review
    • Document exceptions, delays, and customer issues for continuous improvement analysis
  5. Customer Service Support
    • Handle routine customer inquiries regarding delivery times and ETAs
    • Investigate and resolve standard customer complaints related to routing and delivery timing
    • Ensure delivery appointments are scheduled and met in a timely manner to meet customer requirements
    • Proactively communicate with customers regarding potential delays or service disruptions
  6. Compliance & Quality Assurance
    • Verify DOT hours of service compliance for all assigned routes
    • Ensure all orders are accurately reflected in the routing system
    • Maintain accurate records of routing decisions and changes for audit purposes

III. Additional Job Functions

  1. Provide backup coverage for dispatch operations during absences or peak periods
  2. Support training of new routing team members on Omnitracs platforms and company procedures
  3. Participate in continuous improvement projects to enhance routing efficiency
  4. Test and provide feedback on new routing software features and updates
  5. Assist with special projects such as route restructuring, new service area launches, or seasonal planning

Qualifications

 

  • 1-3 years of experience in routing, dispatch, logistics, or transportation coordination
  • Proficiency with routing software (Omnitracs/Roadnet experience strongly preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to make quick decisions under pressure
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Basic understanding of DOT regulations and commercial vehicle operations
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and cloud-based applications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required, associate's degree in Logistics, Business, or related field preferred
