Stimson Lumber Company is seeking a Boiler/Kiln Operator Trainee at our Tillamook who has a commitment to safety and possess great problem-solving skills. Trainees have a great opportunity to learn boiler processes and maintenance while working alongside our operators in an environment that values teamwork and accountability. Boil Operators play a key role in lading kilns, operating and maintaining high-pressure wood-fired boilers. This is a significant role for someone looking to improve their skillset and advance their careers. This position supports:

Schedule:   Rotating schedule of 3 x 12 one week and 4 x 12 the next week. (4:30 am/pm to 5:00 pm/am)

 

Starting Pay: Base pay for this skilled position will start at $23.50 to $25.00 per hour.  People with significant knowledge and experience may come in at a higher level.

 

Pay Differential: The Graveyard position comes with an additional $2.00 per hour in shift differential over your negotiated base pay.

 

Overtime: This position is eligible for Overtime at time and a half.

 

Commute Pay: All Mill employees receive a $350/month fringe benefit to help with the cost of commuting and transportation.  This is the equivalent of another $2.00 per hour for full-time employees.

 

Healthcare: Stimson pays over 80% of the premiums for healthcare coverage for full-time employees, including medical, dental and vision.

 

401(k): Stimson provides a 100% match on the first 6% of your pay when you contribute to your 401(k)-retirement account.

 

Profit Sharing: Contributions are deposited annually into your 401(k) account for Profit Sharing, up to 3% of your pay.

 

Bonus: This position is bonus eligible and will receive a discretionary bonus in years when the company and location are profitable.

 

Paid Time-Off: Position offers 9 paid holidays and 2 weeks of paid vacation.  Paid sick leave is available up to 40 hours per year.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Utilize your knowledge of steam, instrumentation, and controls to efficiently and safely operate our high-pressure wood-fired boilers. 
  • Load and change kiln charges and operate controls 
  • Understand environmental compliance related to operating and repairing boilers 
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance to boilers and related equipment. 
  • Proactively communicate with all departments to understand implications associated with boiler operations; build and maintain working relationships to achieve department and plant goals. 
  • Identify and suggest new approaches or best-known methods to foster continuous improvement mentality
  • Maintain adequate moisture content throughout each charge to maximize quality
  • Check with Planer personnel daily to ensure moisture content is consistent 
  • Perform shoveling and clearing of boiler ash and debris.
  • Fill in for other positions (where qualified) when needed. 

Qualifications: (Preferred, but not required)

  • Understanding of environmental compliance related to boiler and kiln operation 
  • Experience in operating Rolling Stock:
    • D-6 Cat, 950 Cat Loader
    • All sizes of forklift
    • Bobcat 
  • Mechanically inclined with an interest to further develop technical skills 
  • Flexible as the schedule can vary from day to day, including weekends and off-shifts, may include overtime
  • Must be comfortable in year-round outdoor temperatures, in loud conditions, with airborne particles (sawdust), and working around moving mechanical equipment
  • Intermediate computer skills; ability to learn a variety of software applications
  • Ability to understand and analyze operational data in order to improve the operation
  • Candidate must have been employed by Stimson for 6 continuous months prior to applying.
