The NPI Engineer will report to the Engineering and Manufacturing Technology Manager.

Job Overview

Prime’s New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer is responsible for timely introduction of new products into the manufacturing environment while ensuring the highest levels of quality. The NPI Engineer works closely with the customer, program management and production personnel to improve design for manufacturability, as well as define, validate and implement processes to support the introduction of new products into a lean manufacturing environment.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

 

  • Evaluates customer drawings and data for labor quotation and documentation creation.
  • Performs design for assembly (DFA) and design for fabrication (DFF) analysis of product designs using Valor, communicate and mange analysis results and solutions to our suppliers (EMS) and internal design teams to influence quality and manufacturability.
  • Supports the Lean culture and effectively use Lean Sigma concepts and tools to identify and eliminate waste while improving processes.
  • Identifies, improves, recommends, and implements measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, process capability and product quality.
  • Leads the development of design documentation, materials and designs for

Manufacturability.

  • Streamlines manufacturing processes, procedures, work instructions to improve first pass yield, eliminate rework and scrap, standardize and reduce SMT setup and waste.
  • Monitors SMT process and establishes robust, repeatable, and reproducible process parameters and process controls.
  • Provides guidance, direction, and coordination to the technical staff thereby contributing to improvement of skill levels, quality standards, process improvements, problem solving abilities, and continued technical development through education to achieve the six-sigma SMT processing level.
  • Designs and orders solder paste stencils.
  • Provides labor quotes to program management for new products.
  • Creates panelization drawings for quoting as well as new product introductions.
  • Assists in lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Enters assembly bills of material (BOM) in MRP system from customer BOM.
  • Writes and implements Engineering Change Orders (ECO’s).
  • Writes and distributes Temporary Deviation Notices (TDN’s).
  • Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

  • Design for manufacturability DFM for electronic assemblies.
  • Expert knowledge of IPC 610, IPC J-Standard 001.
  • Knowledge in Lean Manufacturing methods with an electronics products manufacturer.
  • Knowledge in using MFG ERP software or similar manufacturing software.
  • Strong thorough knowledge of DFM, NPI, Pin-in-Paste, PoP processes, reporting and tools.
  • Knowledge of use and operation of standard office equipment and be familiar with commonly used CAD, email, Internet, word processing, databases and spreadsheets.

Skills (position requirements at entry):

  • Communication; interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Minimum Requirements

  • 6+ years of demonstrated experience in SMT process engineering.
  • Must be able to read and understand PCA assembly drawings and technical notes.
  • Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and demonstrate the ability to determine critical parameters and develop process controls.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in a technical discipline (computer science, engineering, etc.).
  • 5+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment with SMT knowledge.
  • Experience in Contract Manufacturing and EMS industry desired.
