The Dentist provides comprehensive dental care to patients in a correctional healthcare setting, including routine examinations, preventive treatments, and diagnosis & treatment of dental conditions. This role ensures high-quality care, maintains patient records, and complies with healthcare regulations and safety standards. The Dentist collaborates with other healthcare providers to support the overall health and well-being of the patient population. 

 

How YOU can Make an Impact:

  • Provide high-quality, evidence-based dental care to inmates, including dental exams, diagnoses, and treatment. 

  • Conduct preventative dental services, including cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants.

  • Respond to and manage dental emergencies with timely and appropriate care to alleviate pain and prevent further complications. 

  • Perform minor oral surgical procedures as needed, such as extractions, biopsies, and treatment of oral soft tissue lesions.

  • Refer patients for more complex surgeries when necessary. 

  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for inmates based on thorough oral health assessments and diagnoses. 

  • Provide restorative treatments, including fillings, crowns, and bridges, to restore the function and appearance of patients' teeth. 

  • Take and interpret dental radiographs (X-rays) to assess dental conditions, diagnose problems, and guide treatment decisions. 

  • Provide education and counseling to inmates on oral health, disease prevention, and the importance of good oral hygiene. 

  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, especially for inmates with complex health needs or mental health conditions.  

  • Document promptly and properly all patient interactions, assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and procedures.

  • Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts to improve patient care and outcomes.

  • Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local regulations, as well as facility-specific policies, regarding safety.  

  • Adhere to stringent infection control protocols to ensure a clean and safe environment for both patients and dental staff.

  • Conduct dental screenings at intake and part of routine exams to identify urgent issues and respond appropriately.  

  • Provide guidance to dental support staff, such as dental hygienists and assistants, to ensure the provision of high-quality care.

  • Provide on-call services as needed, including after-hours care for dental emergencies, to ensure patients receive timely treatment. 

  • Maintain effective communication with custody and facility leadership to ensure that all procedures comply with security protocols. 

  • Uphold the highest standards of ethics, patient confidentiality, and informed consent are followed in all patient interactions. 

 

 

 

What we Ask of YOU:

  • A current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice Dentistry in the State of Washington (e.g., DDS, DMD) is required.

  • Hold DEA Registration, or be willing to get DEA Registration, and all permits to order and administer controlled substances. 

  • 1-3 years of clinical practice and 1-2 years in underserved settings is helpful; Clinical training rotations counts as clinical practice.

  • Experience in diagnosis and treatment planning in a managed care or correctional facility setting is very helpful.

  • Active CPR/BLS certificate required prior to Start Date (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved).
