The Calhoun School, a progressive Pre-K through 12th grade institution in New York City, seeks an experienced, collaborative, and innovative Technical Director. Reporting to the Director of Performing Arts, the Technical Theatre Director is responsible for the design and build of theatrical scenic elements, lighting, sound and microphone systems, projection, and video. The Theater Manager/Technical Director will serve with the production manager and may teach courses in other fields of expertise as needed. They will also train, support, encourage, and mentor an inclusive and passionate student body from diverse backgrounds and levels of experience.

 

The position requires presence during evening events.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach classes in Woodshop and other specialty areas in the Middle and Upper School. 

  • Manage Lights/or Sound (depending on the area of expertise for all theatrical productions.

  • Supervise four quarters of a co-curricular commitment as Technical Director, supervising performing arts productions, including theatrical design and general production management, in collaboration with the department.

  • Provide AV technical support for both campuses.

  • Provide technical support for all classes taking place in the theater, theater productions, and events from assemblies to stage productions; and any on-campus school-sponsored events for various departments and school groups

  • Assist in leading student stage crew for plays and musicals.

  • Manage student programs in technical theatre and shop spaces, setting strong safety standards for work in the fabrication and installation/use of scenery, lighting, sound, and costumes for productions.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff colleagues on the management and execution of theatre program needs, providing a rich experience for student learning and growth.

  • Demonstrate theatrical construction, electrical, and theatrical rigging skills, stagecraft, and management of production schedules, with experience in theatrical design.

  • Support community activities in the 81st Street Theater,, including weekly school meetings, guest lecturers, special performances/addresses, form meetings, admissions events, alumni/development events, college counseling events, etc., with additional staff support.

  • Co-coordinate scheduling of performing arts spaces for rehearsals, performances, school assemblies, and all other needs from the school-wide community. 

  • Maintain facility safety and resources, including scheduled maintenance of equipment and technology related to theatrical performances, and ensure the proper functioning of the 138-seat theater venue.

  • Work within the department and in the broader school to foster community and belonging through School initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • 2-3 years experience teaching/directing Middle and Upper School students 
  • A degree with a major in education, theater, or a related field 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills 
  • Supports students’ social-emotional and identity development;
  • The ability to be flexible and adapt when necessary.
