Position Description


DEPARTMENT: Recreation
TITLE: Program Instructor
CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
SUMMARY OF POSITION: Instructs, monitors, and educates patrons on a specific program or recreational activity while maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for class participants.
 

PAY RATE: $15.00/hour - $20.00/hour

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Recreation Supervisor or Coordinator.
SUPERVISION EXCERCISED: Program Assistants, if applicable to program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties and responsibilities listed below are illustrative only and are not meant to be a full and exhaustive listing of all the duties and responsibilities of this position.
1. Teaches scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time; opens and closes the facility as assigned; leaves the facility and/or program space in a clean and organized manner at the conclusion of the program.
2. Instructs patrons on effective program methods and techniques in order to develop or enhance participant’s skills in the program or recreational activity.
3. Ensures proper administration of the program, including: planning, organizing and implementing the program; ensuring each class has the appropriate equipment, supplies, or handouts; and maintaining class attendance and rosters and reporting any discrepancies.
4. Supervises any program assistants including developing work schedules, delegating responsibilities, and monitoring performance.
5. Ensures that safety standards are met, and that department/facility policies are followed.
6. Distributes program evaluations mid-session and end of session.
7. Communicates any program changes – e.g. schedule changes, make-ups, program supplies/equipment needs, behavior issues, etc. – to participants, parents, and the Recreation Supervisor/Coordinator.
8. Presents a professional appearance and is dressed in program-appropriate attire.
9. Performs all tasks within the rules and guidelines of the park district’s safety policy.
10. Other duties as assigned

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
1. Provides backup to related positions when necessary.
2. Assists with general upkeep of program site including light janitorial duties as necessary.
3. Assists with the purchase of program supplies and equipment as necessary.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and Experience:
A. Minimum age is dependent upon the program being instructed, ranging from 16 – 18 years of age.
B. One (1) – three (3) years of experience in instructing the assigned program preferred.
C. Certification in the assigned program preferred, depending on the assigned program.
2. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A. Thorough understanding and skill-set of the program assigned.
B. Ability to effectively communicate one-on-one with individuals and in a group/class setting.
C. Ability to interact with the general public/patrons and co-workers in a professional and positive manner.
D. Ability to work individually and as a team member.

SPECIAL REQUIRMENTS:
1. Certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid from an accredited organization preferred, depending on the assigned program.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
1. Program Equipment.
2. Janitorial equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the physical ability to meet the requires of the assigned program. The employee is frequently required to stand for extended periods of time, run, jog, walk, stoop, crouch, use hands to handle, and to talk and hear. The employee may be required to lift 5 lbs. to 25 lbs. by themselves or 50 lbs. to 75 lbs. with assistance. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties associated with this job, the employee may be required to work outside, during various weather conditions, including hot temperatures, humidity and rain. The employee may also be required to work inside a gymnasium or recreation center and be near people playing games, sports, or other activities/programs. The noise levels may be moderate to loud depending on the program site.
