Position Description
 

DEPARTMENT:  Parks Planning and Development  
TITLE:     Park Maintenance and Landscaping Staff  
CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal, Non-Exempt  
SUMMARY OF POSITION:  Seasonal Park Maintenance and Landscaping staff provide labor and semiskilled labor associated with the care and general maintenance of District parks and facilities to include:  beautification activities, mowing, grass trimming, raking, trash pickup, cleaning of shelters and facilities, tree planting, pruning, trimming and removal.    

PAY RATE: $15.00/hour - $18.00/hour

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Responsible to the Landscape and Horticulture Team Leader  
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  None  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The duties and responsibilities listed below are illustrative only and are not meant to be a full and exhaustive listing of all the duties and responsibilities of this position.  
1. Mows and maintains park and open space areas; removes weeds; cleans and maintains basketball & tennis courts, parking lots, trails and other paved areas; maintains irrigation systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.  
2. Maintains playgrounds and participates in park cleanup activities.  
3. Mows and maintains athletic field areas to include general maintenance, drags and lines fields.  
4. Assists in facility and field preparations necessary for the opening day of outdoor athletic programs, swimming pool, shelters and other park facilities.    
5. Prepares for and works at District special events and activities, and community events.  
6. Inspects, cleans, and performs routine maintenance of district shelters, restrooms and other park amenities on a rotating basis.
7. Performs minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled work.  
8. Performs routine maintenance on lawn, power and vehicular equipment.  
9. Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers; assists in District gardening and other park & facility beautification activities; assists in the care and removal of trees. 10. Performs routine and seasonal custodial work as required.   
11. Picks up litter, collects and disposes of solid waste from District parks and facilities and participates in District recycling activities on a rotating basis.  
12. Assists in the construction of new parks facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.  

13. Assists in incorporating risk management practices and District-wide safety assessments.  Complies with overall risk management goals and objectives.  

14. Performs other duties as assigned.  


PERIPHERAL DUTIES:    
1. Participates in district risk management activities and documents daily work activities.  
2. Acts as a resource to other District staff.  
3. Attends District training opportunities.    

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
1. Education and Experience:  
A. A high school diploma, GED or any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.  
2. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  
A. Some general knowledge and ability to actively participate in facility and grounds maintenance activities.    
B. Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.  
C. Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  
1. Valid State of Illinois driver’s license.  
2. Must be 18 years of age or older.  
3. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.   

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:   The following list of tools and equipment as described herein are representative, and not a complete listing of those tools and equipment an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job:  
Pickup trucks, trucks with trailers; lawn and landscaping equipment including tractors, mowers, snow blowers, skid-steer loaders and attachments, back hoe, front loaders, stumper, chipper, aerators, chainsaws, edgers, weed trimmers, sprinkler and irrigation equipment; hand tools and other tools associated with carpentry, plumbing, electrical and cement work; janitorial equipment including floor buffers, steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, washers and vacuums.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee may work in high, precarious places and may be frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, occasional extreme noise or vibration, may work around operating construction equipment, electrical, mechanical, chemical or explosive hazards.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
