Position Description  


DEPARTMENT:  Parks Planning and Development  
TITLE:     Maintenance and Special Projects Staff  
CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal, Non-Exempt  
SUMMARY OF POSITION:  Seasonal Maintenance and Special Projects Staff actively participate in the implementation and construction of capital improvement projects occurring within the Park District.  
 

PAY RATE: $15.00/hour - $18.00/hour

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Responsible to the Park Maintenance and Special Projects Team Leader  
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  None.    

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The duties and responsibilities listed below are illustrative only and are not meant to be a full and exhaustive listing of all of the duties and responsibilities of this position.  
1. Assists in the implementation of long and short-term capital project plans occurring within the District.  
2. Assists in incorporating risk management practices and District-wide safety assessments.  Complies with overall risk management goals and objectives.
3.  Actively participates in construction projects to include:  The installation of playgrounds, shelters and other park amenities; the operation of tools & equipment to perform site excavation, backfill, rough and final grading work; the operation of tools & equipment to perform concrete work, rough & finish carpentry work and other forms of construction work.  
4. Inspects, cleans, and performs routine maintenance of district shelters, restrooms and other park amenities.  
5. Prepares for and works at District special events and activities, and community events.  
6. Picks up litter, collects and disposes of solid waste from District parks and facilities and participates in District recycling activities.  
7. Performs other duties as assigned.  

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:    
1. Participates in district risk management activities and documents daily work activities.  
2. Acts as a resource to other district staff.  
3. Attends District training opportunities.     

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
1. Education and Experience:    
A. High School Diploma, G.E.D. or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.  
B. Active participation in the construction field to include performing work in construction trades associated with the construction of buildings and facilities.    
2. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  
A. Some general knowledge of building or facility construction.  
B. Some general knowledge and ability to actively participate in building or facility construction projects.    
C. Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.  
D. Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. State of Illinois driver’s license.
2. Must be 18 years of age or older.
3. Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to work in a combination of shop and field environments and travel to/from work sites.  Must be able to lift moderate to heavy objects, materials, tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds by themselves or 75 pounds with assistance; considerable time standing, sitting, walking, driving, kneeling, stooping, crouching, squatting, climbing ladders, crawling, and twisting of upper body. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
