DEPARTMENT: Aquatics Center
TITLE: Swim Lesson Instructor
CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal, Non-Exempt
SUMMARY OF POSITION: Responsible for teaching a variety of swim lesson programs to individuals of all ages and abilities based on American Red Cross standards and program requirements.
PAY RATE: $15.00/hour - $17.00/hour
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Responsible to the Swim Lesson Manager and Pool Manager.
SUPERVISION EXCERCISED: None.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties and responsibilities listed below are illustrative only and are not meant to be a full and exhaustive listing of all the duties and responsibilities of this position.
1. Provides swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages and abilities.
2. Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness.
3. Works hours as scheduled and begins each class on time; remains after class to answer participant and/or parent questions; and cleans up supplies as needed.
4. Effectively communicates with participants and parents of the program.
5. Presents a professional appearance and maintains a high standard of customer service and professionalism.
6. Assists in the risk management activities for the program and pool facility.
7. Acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of participants in the event of an emergency.
8. Reports any work-related or patron injuries to the Swim Lesson Manager.
9. Other duties as assigned.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
1. Provides backup to related positions when possible.
2. Cleaning and organizing of supplies and equipment.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and Experience:
A. Certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid from an accredited organization.
B. Certified Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is desired.
C. Must be able to meet Learn to Swim Level 4 requirements.
2. Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A. Knowledge and ability to demonstrate skills in swim lesson instruction.
B. Knowledge of swim strokes and basic teaching patterns.
C. Knowledge of basic tools and aides that pertain to swim lessons.
D. Excellent communication skills.
E. Ability to work individually and as a team member.
F. Ability to interact with staff and the public in a professional manner.
G. Knowledge of the District’s emergency response plans for the pool facilities.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
1. Program equipment.
2. Janitorial equipment/supplies.
3. Lane wrench.
4. First Aid and AED equipment/supplies.
5. Lift chair.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the physical ability to lead and participate in swim lessons. The employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, swim, kneel, crouch, stoop, crawl, use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects/tools, and to talk or hear. The position generally requires lifting 5 lbs. to 30 lbs., however, it may also require the individual to be able to lift a victim out of the water during emergency rescues. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties associated with this job, the employee will be required to work at a swimming pool facility (indoor and outdoor) with participants involved in recreational activities. While working at the outdoor pool facility, the employee will be exposed to various weather conditions, including hot temperatures, humidity, and rain. Noise levels will be low to moderate.
