This is a full-time position, and receives all benefits afforded to regular employees.

Summary: This position will be responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing laws, protecting the community, responding to criminal activities, and ensuring the well-being of individuals and property within the County jurisdiction.

Essential Job Functions: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations (including traffic, criminal, and civil) in order to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
  • Patrols designated areas Patrols designated areas.
  • Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers.
  • Prevents/discovers commission of a crime; issues citations; pursues fleeing suspects; apprehends, arrests, and processes criminals, fugitives, and offenders; conducts searches of suspects or arrestees.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations of complaints or incidents; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses and records statements.
  • Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters. Enforces vehicle operating laws, parking laws, and DUI laws; conducts field sobriety tests; uses visual observation and radar/laser speed detection units to enforce speed laws.

Qualifications & Benefits

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Associates Degree or a Criminal Justice Certificate from an accredited college, or be a POST Certified Law Enforcement Officer or a P.O.S.T. Per-Service graduate. Two years of military experience or experience as a Police Officer in another State may be substituted in lieu of the required Associate’s degree. Military or out-of-state Police Officer experience of less than two years may be substituted on a year-for-year basis without the required Associate’s degree. Applicants must also meet the following requirements: Must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED; • Must become GA P.O.S.T. Certified within twelve months of employment if not certified when hired. All applicants must pass the Physical Agility Test before employment, and non-certified applicants must complete the GA P.O.S.T. PAT within 30 days before attending the academy. Pass a Psychological examination and pre-employment Physical examination. Complete the Departmental Field Training Program and have no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude or convictions of domestic violence or domestic violence-related offenses. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

The starting salary for a non-certified officer is $52,000.
