Description

Purpose:
To establish the duties and responsibilities of a fire fighter for the South Montgomery County Fire Department (SMCFD) Montgomery County Emergency Service District #8 (MCESD #8)

Duties:

  • Maintain a professional atmosphere and appearance.
  • Provide service to customers by phone or direct public interaction.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies through the proper ordering process; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • At all times, drive and operate department apparatus and equipment in a manner consistent with safety. And with due regard for the welfare of the public and department personnel.
  • Shall operate department apparatus and equipment in accordance with State Vehicle code, Laws, Standards and department policy.
  • Serve as acting company officer in the absence of or as requested by an officer.
  • Act in accordance with department policy and directive, under the direction of their immediate supervisor.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Be proficient in the assigned duties and incidents including but not limited to, fire suppression, salvage and overhaul, technical and high angle rescue, Hazardous Materials, WMD, medical aid, fire prevention / inspections, public relation activities, station, apparatus and equipment operation and maintenance and maintain training levels as directed.
  • Perform tactical fire suppression activities under the direction of person’s assigned supervisory roles, as defined in the department Incident Command procedure, by the Incident Commander.
  • Follow Montgomery County Hospital District protocols, perform emergency services that are consistent with the department’s and the individual’s level of licensure, under the direction of department officers and the individual with the highest level of medical licensure at the scene.
  • Provide any other assistance as it relates to departmental function or as directed by an officer.
  • Attend to all duties to which they may be assigned, detailed or summoned and exert their greatest energy and the best ability to perform their duty under all circumstances.
  • Shall keep themselves in a readiness to perform their duty and not absent themselves from duty or place of assignment without specific permission of their officer.
  • Shall exercise precautionary measures to avoid injury to themselves and other while in the performance of their duty
  • Shall exercise caution to avoid unnecessary damage to or loss of department property and report to their immediate supervisor such damage or loss as soon as practical.
  • Shall be responsible for the safekeeping and proper care of all department property in their charge.
  • Shall accord obedience, respect and courtesy to all officers and members of the public.
  • Shall obtain and maintain their issued department uniforms, equipment and Turn out gear per department policy and directive and shall be in proper uniform while on duty and / or interacting with the public.
  • Shall participate in drills and training activities as directed for all assigned duties including continuing educations for fire and medical licensure.

Other job Duties

  • Respond if available, when paged or recalled for extra-alarm responses or special situations.
  • Participate in department committees as accepted.

Education

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. 

Language Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, to supervisors, other department employees and the general public. Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence, and to present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, citizens, employees and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts necessary to carry out duties and responsibilities.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Computer Skills

  • Basic computer knowledge including the use of the department e-mail system and records management software.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Certification (or higher).
  • Texas Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician EMT-B (or higher).
  • Valid Texas Driver's license.
