Description

Job Purpose:

To establish the duties and responsibilities of the Technology Support Specialist position for the South Montgomery County Fire Department, Montgomery County Emergency Services District No.8 (District):

  • Maintain a professional atmosphere and appearance.
  • Devote his/her full time, attention, and energies to the business of the District.
  • Use his/her best efforts to promote the interests and goodwill of the District.
  • Perform such duties as may be reasonably required by the Fire Chief.
  • Devote a minimum of forty (40) hours per week performing his/her duties.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Act as the first line of technology support to the employees of the District.
  • Work with our IT Vendor and prioritizes repairs based on the needs of the District.
  • Programming, maintaining, tuning, making feature upgrades and the inventory of mobile/handheld radios and pager ensembles.
  • Utilize various radio programing software to program, update and maintain the Districts various radio systems.
  • Be the initial contact on IT/Communications related tickets, and either troubleshoot/repair, or refer to IT Vendor, and then act as a liaison between vendor and the District.
  • Attend communication committee meetings as a representative of the District.
  • Ensure the department complies with all Federal, State, and Local laws regarding technology, IT Security, FOIA requirements regarding compliance with cellular phone records/e-mails/text messages, specifically as it related to HB3834, HB2191, SB944 in addition to Government Chapter Code 522, etc.
  • Be familiar with installing/uninstalling mobile radios from vehicles including making final power and antenna connections.
  • Maintains our accountability system (SDI) and facilitates any upgrades that are needed to the equipment, radios, etc. 
  • Troubleshooting antenna and coax issues utilizing an antenna toner and wattmeter.
  • Make final terminations on CAT 5 and 6 cables and able to do some low voltage wiring.
  • Ability to test, troubleshoot and label network drops as needed.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and coordinates repair of desktop, laptop, and Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) computers with the assistance of the department’s IT vendor.
  • Maintains, updates, and configures Mobile Data Terminals (MDT’s) to function with various websites and apps that the District uses including TRITECH CAD, Responder 360, etc. as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining connectivity between the handheld radios and air packs in addition to troubleshooting any issues that arise and identifying a solution.
  • Programming, maintaining, and troubleshooting cellular modem devices.
  • Maintains districts BGAN internet satellite backup system.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot Station Alerting hardware as needed through the Phoenix System in conjunction with the Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD).
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and plans for future growth to the district's communications capabilities including VHF Repeater frequencies/sites/licenses as well as external antennas on stations/towers.
  • Program and maintain the Districts OPTICOM system.
  • Program and maintain the District's Key Secure program.
  • Manage the Districts phone system.
  • Manage the Districts Bay Door website and associated hardware.
  • Integrates into the department’s incident management team during times of disaster and assists with supporting the Districts overall response.
  • Assists with budgeting for IT and communications projects and needs.
  • Assists with future planning as a part of the departments overall Strategic planning.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Division Head, Assistant Chiefs or Fire Chief.

Qualifications

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Administrative writing skills, Microsoft office, organization, analyzing information, professionalism, problem solving, supply. management/inventory control, written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to a dynamic workload.
  • Knowledgeable regarding IT, Servers, structured cabling and computer hardware/software and modems.
  • Familiarity with the operation and programing of mobile and handheld radios using various software programs.
  • Familiarity with MDTs and how they interface back to the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)/our network.
  • Firm grasp of digital and analogue VHF, UHF, and 700/800 MHz frequency spectrums.
  • Familiarity with Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Requirements.
