Job Summary

As a Haunt Production Tech, you’ll blend scenic carpentry, technical know-how, and live event readiness to set up, maintain, and tear down Austin’s most iconic haunt. You’ll work daily to ensure all show elements, from lighting to pneumatics to scenic builds, are safe, functional, and fear-inducing. 

Requirements

Build & Carpentry

  • Assist in scenic construction, daily repairs, and structural maintenance of haunted attractions.

  • Safely operate power tools and fabricate walls, set pieces, and support elements for both indoor and outdoor environments.

  • Ensure structural integrity under heavy use and exposure to weather.

Technical Systems & Show Maintenance

  • Design, install, wire, and troubleshoot electrical systems for haunted attractions, escape rooms, and immersive sets.

  • Program, test, and maintain DMX-controlled lighting and addressable LED systems to create dynamic effects.

  • Build, configure, and maintain PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems for automated scare sequences and interactive elements.

  • Assemble, repair, and maintain pneumatic systems for animatronics and motion-based props.

  • Wire and test fright prop controllers (e.g., Fright Ideas) and motion sensors for seamless scares and guest interactions.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot interactive tech, including escape game wiring and show control systems.

Daily Operations & Show Readiness

  • Conduct pre-show inspections and reset scenic and technical elements each event night.

  • Remain on-call during operational hours to resolve show-critical technical or scenic issues quickly.

  • Monitor and report malfunctioning props, lighting, sound systems, and safety concerns.

Team Collaboration & Safety

  • Collaborate closely with technical leads, designers, fabricators, actors, and show managers to execute creative and technical visions.

  • Travel to off-site locations as needed for installation, troubleshooting, or repairs during events.

  • Follow all safety protocols related to rigging, electrical work, fire hazards, and prop use.

  • Assist with post-season teardown and equipment storage.

  • Maintain strict safety standards for all electrical and mechanical systems.


 

 

Qualifications

Availability: Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and during peak Halloween season. Consistent attendance is expected.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 and over to apply to this position. 

  • Proven experience in wiring, electrical work, or related technical fields.

  • Strong hands-on experience in carpentry or scenic construction (theater or live events preferred).

  • Working knowledge of basic electrical wiring, lighting systems (DMX), and pneumatics.

  • Familiarity with DMX programming tools (e.g., Light-O-Rama, QLab) and PLC software.

  • Experience with prop controllers, fright ideas controllers, and escape room technology (training provided for niche systems).

  • Familiarity with addressable LED technology and xLights software.

  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work on ladders, and function in dark, tight, fog-filled, or haunted-house-ready spaces.

  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during peak seasons (especially August–November/Halloween season).

  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and thrives in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a “make it work” attitude under pressure.
