Summer Camp - Senior Counselor

Senior Counselors serve as the primary caregivers and guides for a dedicated group of up to 18 campers in Kindergarten through 4th grade throughout each camp session. They greet campers each morning in their “bunks”, ensure they are prepared for the day’s activities, escort them to various programs and activity stations throughout the day, assist activity instructors with delivering high-quality activity programming, monitor lunchtime, and help campers pack up at the end of the day. By providing consistent supervision and support, Senior Counselors help create a positive, memorable camp experience. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Camp by the Bay dates are June 16 - July 25, with a mandatory staff orientation June 11 - 13, and no camp on June 19, July 3, and July 4. The daily work hours are 8:30 - 3:00 p.m., with a mandatory staff meeting on Wednesdays from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Applicants who are not available to work the entire camp period are still encouraged to apply, but preference will be given to applicants who are able to work the entire work period. 
  • Greet and sign in campers each morning, oversee daily routines, and facilitate a sense of belonging within the group.
  • Lead campers to scheduled activities (e.g., athletics, arts, performing arts, STEM) and assist Activity Instructors with set-up, classroom management, and break-down as needed. 
  • Organize and monitor lunch, ensuring a safe and orderly environment while encouraging positive social interactions.
  • Supervise safety, participation, and behavior of campers throughout the day, proactively addressing any issues that arise.
  • Help campers pack up personal belongings, review their day’s experiences, and prepare them for pick-up at the end of each day.
  • Work closely with Activity Instructors, junior counselors, and camp administration to provide a seamless, high-quality day camp experience.
  • Communicate promptly with parents and camp administration regarding any health, behavioral, or other significant concerns involving campers or camp staff.
  • Assist with additional camp logistical operations as needed (car line, etc…) at the direction of the Camp Director. 

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children, whether as a teacher, education major, or in a related field.
  • Ability to manage daily schedules, keep track of group logistics, and maintain a fun yet structured atmosphere.
  • Comfortable interacting with campers, parents, and fellow staff; able to relay information clearly and proactively.
  • Strong communication and classroom management skills. Able to give clear instructions, maintain schedules, respond to camper behavioral concerns or conflicts quickly and effectively, and adapt activities as needed to ensure campers are engaged and receiving high-quality programming.
  • Willingness to collaborate with camp staff to ensure smooth transitions between activities and resolve camper-related concerns.
  • Enthusiasm for engaging with children, encouraging their growth, and fostering a welcoming environment.
