Purpose of this Position:
To generally supervise the staff of the Department of Public Safety in the day-to-day operation on a per diem basis. Performs other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned or ordered by the Assistant Vice President of Campus Safety and Security/ Chief of Police.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
The position is unique to the campus. There are not similar positions in other departments. The department operates on a 24-hour-a-day schedule and the Part-Time Sergeant must be able to respond and supervise any shift in case of a special need or emergency on a per diem basis

Essential Duties:
- Supervises and provides guidance and oversight of all sworn (police officers) and non-sworn (CSO’s) subordinate staff members
- Conducts and participates in regular patrol and call response functions
- Maintains regular communication with the shift supervisors and Officer in Charge to assist in supervising the department.
- Assists with the coordination, planning and staffing of major functions on and off campus. (Ex. Graduation, Homecoming, Spring Concert, etc.)
- Assist with the coordination of training programs for department members as well as regularly required training programs.
- Must be able to respond and supervise any shift on a 24-hour basis in case of a special need or emergency on a per diem basis
- Maintain compliance with departmental regulations and procedures.
- Perform various special projects as assigned by his/her direct supervisors.
- Ability to perform all duties as described under campus police officers.
- Prepare necessary reports and records.
- Insure adherence to all applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures and their application to a specific situation.
- Inspect, correct and approve written reports of officers.
- Assign follow-up investigative duties to officers. Make sure all follow-ups are completed and pass on all necessary information to the department investigator. Become involved in any follow-up investigations that need the attention of the supervisor.
- Prepare and forward requests for disciplinary action against assigned personnel to the Administrative Lieutenant. Be responsible for initial disciplinary action taken.
- Work with the Springfield Police Department or other agencies, as the need requires. Be familiar with contact persons within such agencies.
- Control, detour, restrict or block off vehicular traffic and pedestrian traffic on campus as required to provide adequate protection to persons and property. Be alert to situations, which may necessitate such action and implement as necessary.

Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Campus Safety and Security/Chief of Police/ Deputy Police Chief/ Detective Lieutenant.
