Temporary School Nurse Assignment- 1:1 Student/Nurse Assignment
Position Summary
The Private Duty Nurse (PDN) provides individualized nursing care to a designated student throughout the school day, including during bus transportation to and from school and during school-related activities such as field trips. The PDN ensures that all medical needs of the assigned student are met in accordance with physician orders, the student’s health plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP), and school district policies. This is a contracted position and not an employee of the school system.
Key Responsibilities

- Provide one-on-one medical care only to the assigned student; not responsible for other students, staff, or visitors.
- Arrive on time and maintain regular attendance at the assigned location.
- Maintain student confidentiality at all times.
- Follow all specific physician orders and provide a copy to the School Nurse.
- Handle all medical emergencies related to the assigned student.
- Support activities of daily living for the student (e.g., feeding, diapering, dressing, lifting, and positioning), unless otherwise addressed by instructional staff per the IEP.
- Accompany and remain near the student at all times, including on the school bus.
- Maintain visual access and availability to the student throughout the school day, unless otherwise stated in the student's health plan or IEP.
- Make efforts to ensure medical care is non-disruptive to the classroom environment.
- Collaborate with teachers and related service providers if appropriate and agreed upon, to support the implementation of the student’s IEP.
- Participate in IEP meetings when requested, providing relevant medical input.
- Ensure all medical equipment and supplies required for the student’s care are on hand and in working order.
- Follow all district school board policies, school rules, and procedures.
- Submit accurate and timely timesheets on a weekly basis.
- Use personal cell phones in vibrate mode and discreetly during designated break times only.
- Refrain from interacting with other students unless directed by school staff.
- Eat only at designated times during full-day shifts (lunch is not provided during half-day assignments).
Working Conditions
- This position involves working closely with a student who may have complex medical needs.
- May require physical tasks such as lifting, transferring, or repositioning the student. While performing the duties under this contract, you will be required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations and walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (carry, lift, move) students ages 3–21 as needed.
- Must be comfortable working in a school and transportation environment with minimal supervision.
