JOB SUMMARY

The Operations Manager of this area reports to the Division Manager and leads teams with a management style that focuses on mentoring and coaching. The Operations Manager should have impeccable organizational skills, including the ability to organize inventory, projects, equipment and facilities and oversee multiple teams of people including key supervisors responsible for the restocking, receiving, merchandising, plant health and picking of orders. The Operations Manager leads in the recruiting and retention of a team made up of 65-75 people and oversees the day-to-day operation of a large nursery operation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Directly manage 7 – 10 supervisors in the Operations Department.
  • Oversee the schedule of Operations staff, including setting and changing seasonal schedules with an eye toward the overtime budget.
  • Communicate staffing needs to HR including personnel increases and decreases.
  • Conduct daily team meetings.
  • Guide supervisors on team organization and development.
  • Collaborate and communicate with sales and management groups to resolve any issues or conflicts that arise.
  • Ensure that the Microsoft Teams channels are running smoothly.
  • Maintain the quality and beauty of the product, as well as the sales area by culling product, and merchandising areas.
  • Oversee physical infrastructure, ensuring that all employee and customer areas are safe and clean.
  • Coordinate with the Grounds and Maintenance departments to maintain and address any needed repairs to rolling stock.
  • Ensure a safe workplace with appropriate signage, training, first aid and precautionary measures.
  • Understand how all teams in the department work and intersect with each other, coordinating the smooth transfer of information between all.
  • Contribute to seasonal layout plans with an eye toward efficiency and customer convenience.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Execute the duties of the position in alignment with the Company Mission and Conduct Polices.
  • Use technology as required by the position.
  • Complete required annual trainings as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

  • Recruit, train, oversee and terminate employees.  
  • Complete Performance Management documents including Performance Reviews and Performance Improvement Plans and conduct meetings with team members to discuss performance, goals and development opportunities.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • 7+ years’ experience in the green industry with herbaceous and/or woody plant maintenance and nomenclature.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead, and mentor groups.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on employee relations.
  • Knowledge of technology including Microsoft Office products and point of sale applications, internet and networks.
  • Design aesthetic to support the sales mission of the department.
  • Collaborate with other departments including growing, IT and buying.
  • Superb attention to detail especially as related to item codes and UPCs.
  • Mechanical aptitude and machine operation a plus.
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish.
