Description

Overall Responsibilities:

  • Plan, oversee and produce special awards sections and the Book of Lists annually and assists with other PBN special publications.
  • Assist editor with planning and production of the sections, as well as proofread and edit content for publication.
  • Reporting as needed for daily web and print publications.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Plans, directs and executes 10 annual special awards sections, assigning stories to writers, overseeing design and serving as the primary decision-maker regarding editorial content, style and presentation. Ensures standards of deadlines, quality control, editorial direction and style are met.
  • Assigns stories and photographs for special awards sections and edits this material for news value, accuracy, clarity and timeliness.
  • Checks and/or reviews editorial material for libel, taste, style, accuracy, fairness and reader interest.
  • Work with freelancers and honoree subjects to resolve any communication barriers in producing profiles for awards sections.
  • Attends industry and other relevant regional business events, representing Providence Business News in a positive, professional manner.
  • Carefully proofreads and copy edits all special awards sections and meets regular production deadlines to allow for proper workflow within editorial department.
  • Produces business directory ranking lists for both online and biweekly print publications, special awards sections if needed and the annual Book of Lists.
  • Additional print editorial duties include compiling events listings, Q&A profiles and other print features when necessary.
  • Reporting for daily web includes quick news hits and in-depth enterprise stories, mainly covering the education and nonprofit sectors.
  • Reporting duties also include producing small news items for a biweekly education/nonprofit newsletter. Content includes Q&A profile and short web news items.
  • Adheres to company and departmental policies, standard practices and ethical standards of the industry.
  • Proper planning for content production essential; must be self-motivated.
  • Positive representative of department, company and industry at all times.
  • Provides quality customer service via phone, email and face-to-face interaction to both internal and external customers.
  • Communicates information to the appropriate individuals and/or departments in a timely manner, such as news tips, source suggestions or real or potential customer-relations issues.
  • Works in cooperation with all members of company in general and Editorial Department in particular.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Skills: Planning, management and organization, editing, writing, spelling and grammar. Knowledge of AP Style and WordPress. News judgment. Ability to track and incorporate analytics into news placement decisions. Ability to learn and use new technology.

Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent. At least two years of experience in journalism. Comfortable with social media, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, with the desire to explore new platforms. Knowledge of Legendary Data database software is preferred, but not required.
