As a Bolt purchasing agent you will be responsible to determine the bolt and misc. steel requirements for all jobs and timely purchase of them using the MRP system and other system tools provided to you. The Purchasing agent will negotiate pricing, select the best vendors for a job, help vette vendors, place and expedite all orders. The Purchasing agent will communicate all job material issues to project teams. They will also follow all budgets and advise project teams when budget discrepancies occur.
Core Responsibilities
- Approves vendor invoices for bolts and misc products timely and confirms all items have been received prior to approval
- Assists where needed in estimating bolt prices for estimating
- Buys all bolts and misc products to meet budget, quality, special requirements and job schedule and enters PO's accordingly
- Completes material status reports weekly
- Continually watch spend for waste items, excess freight and other preventable costs
- Creates JOB BUYING PLAN for all jobs assigned to buyer
- Expedites all material Pos at least weekly, relays any problems to PM teams, shop, production and field superintendents
- Follows up on all bolt releases needed from project team
- Helps VP vette all vendors, advises VP of all delivery issues, quality issues and other vendor problems and assists in vendor audits
- Measures cost savings vendor to vendor
- Participates in pre-job planning, kick off meeting, confirming LOI/contracts release buying, QA/QC checklist, Schedule, job specs and origin requirements
- Track budgets on all buys
- Tracks receipt of bolts at job sites, confirms all paperwork is received and certs are received
- Vendor visits and builds vendor relationships
- Works with VP on bolt claims
- Ensure the terms of purchase and prices of materials adhere to contractual or negotiated pricing parameters.
- Schedule the specifics of size, shape and length of required bolts to enable ease of flow through the fabrication process.
- Follow jobs in progress to expedite or delay shipments as needed to control inventory and expenses.
- Interface with various levels of management with differing demands.
- Manage multiple projects while meeting stringent deadlines.
Work Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of experience directly related purchasing experience in the steel fabrication business.
Education/Training
High school diploma or equivalent with demonstrable progress towards professional certification (for example APICS) or industry specific education or training in detailing, estimating or fabrication.
Specialized Knowledge Certificates & Licenses
As outlined in the Core Competencies, an individual must have thorough knowledge and an advanced understanding of each competency outlined above in order to carry out the essential functions of this position. Specialized Knowledge is also required in the following areas:
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic business and purchasing principles;
- Basic knowledge and understanding of steel construction in terms of required materials;
- General understanding of Advanced Bill of Materials, Bill of ladings, and Purchase Order Processing;
- Strong knowledge of plate products and plate mills and service center vendors.
- Understands and follows all SOX related buying requirements
Software & Technology
Position will require the frequent use of MS Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and Blue Beam PDF Software. Use of Kronos for timekeeping, and other software will be required (training will be provided).
Work Environment
Position requires as many hours needed to fulfill the daily and weekly obligations required to carry out the functions. Working long days including evenings and weekends can be required for this position. This position is indoors and may sit for long periods of eight (8) hours or more per day. Position requires ability to lift and carry shop drawings on occasion. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 lbs.
