What You Will Do:

The Senior Accountant leads the organization’s revenue recognition function. This role is critical to ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant revenue reporting across multiple income streams including grants, contributions, and program revenue.. This person will work closely with fundraising and sales staff, the Controller and Chief Financial Officer. 

This position is fully remote for a candidate who lives in California, Virginia or Washington.

Your primary job will be to:

Revenue Accounting & Recognition

  • Manage revenue accounting for all sources including grants, donations, sponsorships, and earned income.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of restricted and unrestricted revenue in accordance with GAAP and funder requirements.
  • Track deferred revenue, reconcile accounts, and prepare journal entries as part of the monthly close process.
  • Coordinate with the development and sales teams regarding collection of outstanding pledges and accounts receivable.
  • Maintain and improve systems for monitoring receivables, donor restrictions, and grant reporting deadlines.

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Track and report on the organization’s restricted funds, including complying with donor reporting requirements.
  • Work with fundraising staff, Controller and CFO to ensure the accurate preparation of grant budgets, develop spending projections, and monitor expenditures to ensure they comply with donor restrictions.
  • Support annual budget development with revenue projections and trend analysis.

Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Support the annual audit by preparing revenue schedules, grant reconciliations, and audit documentation.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and footnotes as they relate to revenue.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and funder regulations, including 2 CFR Part 200 (Uniform Guidance), if applicable.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements and internal controls related to revenue and reporting.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Other

  • Work closely with Development and Program teams to align revenue data with programmatic outcomes and donor reporting.
  • Maintain clear and proactive communication with internal stakeholders to ensure financial transparency
  • Attend occasional meetings in person (anticipated to be less than four times per year).
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Compensation:

  • $80,000 - $90,000 annual salary

Qualifications

Who You Are:

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of accounting experience, including revenue recognition and financial analysis. CPA/CMA certification or progress toward certification preferred. 
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles, including familiarity with federal grant compliance.
  • Proven experience managing restricted/unrestricted funds and grant reporting. 
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting software (e.g., MIP, QuickBooks, Sage Intact, or similar). 
  • Demonstrated experience managing large datasets and working with donor databases or CRMs (e.g., Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge).
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Prior experience with business process optimization, project management, and change management within a finance function preferred.
  • Self-motivated with the ability work independently, problem-solve, manage complex and confidential issues
  • Able to prioritize, multi-task, and have a high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
