Position Summary

Nichols Brothers Boat Builders & Everett Ship Repair is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Marine Shipyard Apprenticeship Coordinator to oversee and enhance our state-certified apprenticeship programs. This role is vital in developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople in the maritime industry through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction. The ideal candidate will collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure compliance with program standards and support apprentices throughout their development journey. This position requires substantial administrative responsibilities and regular travel between shipyard locations and external outreach events.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate training for apprentices across trades including Pipefitter, Shipfitter, Painter, Machinist, Welder, and Tester.
  • Oversee all administrative operations related to apprenticeship programs, including intake, enrollment, documentation, registration, time tracking, performance reporting, and compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Monitor on-the-job training, track attendance at related supplemental instruction (RSI) classes, and ensure compliance with Washington State apprenticeship standards.
  • Maintain detailed records and input data into systems such as the Washington State ARTS management system to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and training personnel to maintain up-to-date and effective curriculum and training delivery.
  • Provide mentorship and support to apprentices through regular check-ins, job site walks, and individual learning plan reviews.
  • Work with supervisors and journey-level employees to ensure proper mentorship and job assignments for apprentices.
  • Deliver training materials, perform step tests, and other instructional resources.
  • Regularly travel between shipyard locations, visit local schools, and attend job fairs, recruiting events, and workforce development meetings to promote skilled trades and expand the pipeline of qualified candidates.
  • Engage in community outreach and collaborate with workforce development and educational partners to promote skilled trades.
  • Support leadership development and cultural integration efforts for apprentices and supervisory staff.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in marine construction, ship repair, or related trades.
  • Working knowledge of vessel systems, construction methods, and industry standards (USCG, classification societies).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to coach and mentor apprentices.
  • Demonstrated experience handling high volumes of paperwork and data entry, ideally in a regulated or state-compliant setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint.
  • Organized with strong time and project management skills.
  • Technical expertise in at least one of the supported trades.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently between worksites and to external outreach locations.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in relevant fields such as engineering, construction management, or business.
  • Project Management certification and experience using MS Project.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, charts, etc.).
  • Experience with instructional design and curriculum development.
  • Bilingual (oral and written) is a plus.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.

 

Compensation and Benefits
