Role

Mortgage Loan Underwriters are responsible for underwriting conventional, construction, and internal loan products, while following established company and investor guidelines to insure salability and minimal loss.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Review and evaluate information on mortgage loan documents to determine if buyer, property and loan conditions meet Credit Union and government standards.

Approve or reject loan application or requests additional information.

Evaluate acceptability of loan to corporation that buys real estate loans on secondary mortgage markets (where existing mortgages are bought and sold by investors).

Assemble documents in loan file, including acceptance or denial, and returns file to originating mortgage loan department.

Record loan rejection, specifying investor and Credit Union guidelines and basis for declining application.

Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills

Experience

Five years to eight years of similar or related experience.

Education/Certifications/Licenses

(1) A two year college degree or (2) Completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or (3) Completion of a specialized and extensive in-house training or apprenticeship program.

Interpersonal Skills

A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is usually of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating, influencing or training others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others.

Other Skills

Is responsible for a width of information including but not limited to: the organizations current mortgage loan interest rates, commitment/rate lock/relock fee procedures, consumer loan products/rates/guidelines that are used in conjunction with Mortgage Lending (Execulines, second mortgage products, swing loans, land loans, etc.), any loan origination software system. Must have excellent knowledge of P1FCU mortgage products and services. Must be familiar with various computer software programs and comfortable with automated technology. Must be able to type, use PC, general office equipment including ten-key calculator and excellent in Excel and Word programs. Excellent organizational and editing skills, communication skills with staff.

Physical Requirements

Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Working Conditions

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.

Mental and/or Emotional Requirements

Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
