Set-up and Strike Labor – The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor
On-site Location: 1126 Queens Hwy, Long Beach, CA 90802

Pay Rate: $20–$26 per hour, based on skill set, role, experience, qualifications, and certifications.

 

Setup Dates:

  • Orientation: July 28, 7:00 am–11:00 am (half day)
  • Setup: July 29–September 18, Monday–Friday, 7:00 am–3:00 pm

Strike Dates:

  • November 3–13, working every day, 7:00 am–3:00 pm

Position Summary

Join the Set-up and Strike Team for Dark Harbor at The Queen Mary! This is a seasonal, hands-on role supporting the setup, build, and breakdown of one of Southern California’s most immersive haunted attractions. The work is fast-paced and collaborative, involving manual labor, custom fabrication, and operation of power tools and specialized equipment. Positions and Pay Rates

We are hiring for multiple roles with pay rates based on position, skill set, experience, qualifications, and certifications:

 

  • Crew ($22.00/hr): Works as part of the main event build team, assembling structures, props, and scenic elements under supervision.
  • Forklift Driver ($25.00/hr): Operates forklifts and other material-handling equipment to safely move heavy items and supplies around the event site.
  • Carpenter ($26.00/hr): Constructs, installs, and repairs wooden structures and scenic elements for the event using a variety of tools and techniques.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Manual Labor: Lift, carry, and assemble event structures, props, and scenic elements.
  • Unique Build & Setup: Construct and install custom features, immersive environments, and interactive experiences tailored to a haunted attraction.
  • Power Tool & Equipment Operation: Safely use power tools and specialized equipment for fabrication, installation, and modifications.
  • Forklift Operation: Move heavy materials and equipment (forklift certification preferred, but not required for all roles).
  • Following Directions: Execute tasks efficiently and safely by following supervisor and event manager instructions.
  • Fast-Paced Environment: Work quickly under tight deadlines, adapting to changing priorities and schedules.
  • Safety & Maintenance: Maintain a clean, safe workspace, ensuring proper use and storage of all tools and equipment.
  • Team Collaboration: Cooperate closely with strike team members, carpenters, scenic artists, and event staff.

 

 

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 and over to apply for this position
  • Must have dependability and availability for the dates listed. 
  • Versatility: We value a range of skills—while not everyone needs the full skill set, the more versatile you are, the better!
  • Unique Build Experience: Experience with custom fabrication, immersive environments, or themed event setup is a plus. Haunted attractions, theatrical builds, or large-scale event experiences are highly valued.
  • Power Tools & Equipment: Comfortable and safe with a variety of power tools and equipment.
  • Physical Requirements: Able to lift heavy objects, stand for extended periods, and work outdoors in all weather.
  • Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Forklift Drivers – Must have current OSHA-compliant forklift certification. Certification must be valid and specific to the type of forklift being operated.
  • Reliability: Dependable, punctual, and accurate in following instructions.
  • Adaptability: Willing to learn new skills and adjust to changing needs.

Work Environment

  • Location: The Queen Mary, Long Beach, CA (Dark Harbor event)
  • Schedule: Seasonal; shifts may include evenings and weekends as event deadlines approach.
  • Conditions: Fast-paced, physically demanding, may require working at heights or in confined spaces.
