Reporting to the VP, Engineering + R&D, the Design Technologist I role is responsible for executing, maintaining, and documenting internal design technology and operations workflows. This role serves as a systems and process expert, ensuring the smooth functioning of existing tools while identifying areas for optimization across departments. It plays a critical part in enhancing operational efficiency, supporting margin improvement, and eliminating silos within the organization.

This position combines process knowledge with data analysis skills to uncover trends, recommend system improvements, and monitor progress on implementation initiatives. The Design Technologist I works closely with the Design Technology team and other department leads to provide training, offer technical support, and continuously improve operational processes. Once updates to systems or procedures are made, the individual is responsible for documenting those changes clearly and consistently to support internal communication and future scalability.

By maintaining close communication with project teams and department heads, this role ensures that workflows are aligned with business goals and that changes are effectively communicated and supported throughout the organization.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/FUNCTIONS may include but are not limited to:

 

Execute

  • Execute and support daily operations processes with a focus on efficiency and accuracy.
  • Responsible for data reporting efforts across Operations and Accounting, including capacity planning, labor tracking, inventory oversight, and project performance metrics.
  • Ensure accurate project system setup and ownership, including organizing project folders, configuring Wrike projects, and maintaining associated documentation.
  • Maintain Wrike data integrity and drive process optimization through collaboration with department leaders and verification of system data.
  • Deliver performance visibility to Operations teams by supporting and refining the data and reporting infrastructure.

 

Maintain

  • Support the maintenance of established Design Technology and Operations system workflows by monitoring performance and making adjustments as needed post-implementation.
  • Oversee the ongoing use and effectiveness of data reporting and automation tools across Operations and Accounting, including systems for capacity planning, labor tracking, inventory management, and project performance analysis.
  • Monitor estimated versus actual hour tracking across all revenue-generating departments, with a focus on identifying cost variances and improving forecasting accuracy.
  • Leverage internal estimates and project management tools to support automation and reporting workflows.
  • Stay up to date on software updates and emerging technologies, continuously seeking opportunities for innovation, automation, and process improvement.

 

Document & Share

  • Develop clear, accessible documentation for new Design Technology and Operations system workflows and processes to ensure understanding and ease of use across teams.
  • Create training materials for both current staff and new hires, aligning content with evolving tools and practices.
  • Leverage technology to maintain and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), including written guides, video tutorials, and organized file storage systems; support department-level training using these resources.
  • Lead training sessions for employees at all levels, focused on Design Technology workflows and continuous process improvement.

 

Collaborate

  • Maintain an active presence within Operations departments to build relationships and gain a deep understanding of each team’s specific workflows and challenges.
  • Partner with Operations leaders to drive cross-functional process improvements across Design, Engineering, Production, Technology, and Subcontractor/Project Management functions.
  • Work across departmental lines to identify friction points, resource or knowledge gaps, and collaborate with stakeholders to implement effective solutions that align with project goals and client expectations.
  • Serve as a proactive contributor to ongoing operational enhancements, championing a culture of continuous improvement throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate with Operations leads to run Weekly Project Status meetings, documenting key decisions and action items
  • Collaborate with the Director of Project Management to document After-Action Reviews (AARs)

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace
  • Experienced in creating documentation for projects or technology initiatives
  • Familiar with tools such as InDesign, PowerPoint, Miro, Visio, and Prezi for presentations and communication
  • Exposure to scripting languages like Python, C#, or VB is a plus
  • Familiarity with BIM software including Revit, BIM 360, Rhino, and SketchUp is a plus
  • Knowledge of general construction methods, material application, and manufacturing processes is a plus
  • Experience with online systems for project tracking, prioritization, and calendar management is preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in Operations, Project Management, Account Management, or Business Development, with a focus on business operations and process development
  • Proven experience in budget management, KPI development, and operational oversight
  • Strong preference for candidates with experience using Salesforce CRM and Microsoft Excel
  • Previous experience in the Fabrication, Construction, or Architecture industry is a plus

While performing the duties of this job, employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions.
