POSITION SUMMARY:

The Nursing Director provides direct nursing care to campers living with chronic and life-altering medical conditions while participating in Camp Korey programming. The position will collaborate with Medical Director, volunteer medical staff and the Camp Experience (Program) Team to ensure that campers are provided with the highest quality of care. Leading up to and during camp programs the Nursing Director is in a leadership role in preparing for camp and training seasonal staff.  In conjunction with the Admissions and Outreach Coordinator, Camp Director, and Medical Director, the Nursing Director will determine camper eligibility and acuity and be the main contact for camper families, and will ensure the safety, health and well-being of campers, their families, staff and volunteers during on-site programming. Camp Korey is a member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network and is accredited through SeriousFun and the American Camp Association (ACA). This position reports to the Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Our picturesque 200-acre property is located at 24880 Brotherhood Rd in Mount Vernon. This full-time hybrid position requires on-site work and residency during peak camp season (June-August). Off-season allows for flex time and a combination of in-office and home-office work.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak, talk and hear, and is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, and bend; lift, carry, move, push and pull up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  This position will require the stamina and ability to walk up and downstairs, long distances, uphill, and over uneven terrain, and drive vehicles. Able to work flexible hours, which will include weekends, evenings and overnights during camp sessions. To be available outside of regularly scheduled hours in a supervisory role promoting operational success and staff support.

Travel: Occasional travel in Pacific Northwest with occasional opportunities to travel for SeriousFun Children’s Network events.

Work Environment: Work is partially performed in office environments routinely utilizing standard office equipment, computers and phones in an open environment with multiple distractions and interruptions. Working outside will be necessary, in various weather conditions. Frequent interaction with campers, camper families, medical staff, and sometimes stressful situations. Adherence to strict safety, privacy, and hygiene protocols. Exposure to contagious diseases may require the ability to handle emergencies effectively.

Driver Role: Valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation; ability to meet Camp Korey insurance requirements and appropriately operate Camp Korey vehicles in accordance with policy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Year-Round/Overall Responsibilities

  • Participates as a member of the medical team and collaborates with the Camp Director to ensure coordination of medical and programming activities.
  • Participates in assuring the safety of the facility from the medical perspective.
    • Maintains adequate medical coverage at all high-risk program areas at Camp Korey.
  • Assist with camper recruitment, referral, screening and selection. 
    • Updates, maintains and assures accuracy of medical information in the camper/staff database.
  • Works with the Medical Director to ensure that Lee Lair medical center and the health care at camp is in compliance with all state, national, ACA, and SeriousFun regulations.
    • Prepares for site visits from regulatory agencies (Department of Health, SeriousFun, ACA).
    • Maintains required federal and state records and reports regarding the use of narcotics and restricted medications at Camp Korey.
    • Maintains and orders appropriate inventory of medications, equipment, supplies and linens for the medical center and ensures equipment is in working order.
  • Implements and updates Camp Korey health policies (including standing orders, immunization policies, etc.) and an emergency preparedness plan in coordination with the Leadership team and Medical Director.
    • Reviews and updates the healthcare and Lee Lair medical center component of the Camp Manual.
    • Ensures staff has current required medical training (CPR, AED, Mandatory Reporting, etc.)
  • Maintains and updates lists of referring physicians, hospitals, volunteer health organizations, and pharmacies; investigates opportunities for donations of medical supplies, equipment and medications.
  • Works with Director of Camp Experience and Medical Director to create and adhere to medical budget.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with other SeriousFun camps.
  • Participates in Donor relations and medical volunteer recruitment through tours, attendance at fundraising events, and making presentations at community and medical events.
  • Liaise with Medical Director and Medical Advisory Board Chair to develop quarterly MAB agenda.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Summer Camp/Weekend Program Responsibilities

  • Review and prepare camper records prior to arrival at camp.
  • Communicate with camper families to ensure accurate and complete records as required prior to arrival at camp.
  • Reside on site in provided housing and remain on site when campers are present.
  • Administrative
    • Works with the Camp Experience team to ensure the safety and medical well-being of the children and families that we serve.
    • Along with the Medical Director, develops and conducts staff and volunteer medical training & orientation.
    • Ensures the confidentiality of all medical information and records of campers, staff, and volunteers.
    • Responsible for communicating with campers’ families and physicians as needed.
    • Maintain camp standards of confidentiality regarding camper medical records.
  • Staff/Volunteer related duties:
    • Recruits, interviews and assists with hiring summer nursing staff and volunteer nurses.
    • Ensures that medical staff follow all Camp Korey medical policies and procedures for campers and staff.
    • Responsible for medical team completing the following:
      • Prepare, distribute, and administer scheduled medications and medical treatments to campers, staff and volunteers, with physician or ARNP oversight.
      • Coordinate camper intake with Medical Director and volunteer medical staff.
      • Maintain appropriate records of medication distribution, medical treatments and medical procedures.
        • Administer controlled substances with oversight, if so licensed.
      • As needed, prepare and administer medications as scheduled and as necessary to campers and staff in accordance with Treatment Guidelines and/or physician orders. 
        • Methods of administration include: oral, IM, SQ, IV, topical, ophthalmic, nebulizer.
      • As needed, provide routine procedures as scheduled and as necessary for each camper, including the care of internal and external central lines, dressing changes, G-Tube and other continuous/bolus feeds, urinary catheters, etc. 
      • Prepares schedule of overnight medical coverage by volunteer staff as appropriate. 
      • To counsel and respond to campers and families with concerns, medical complications and other situations as they arise.
      • Coordinates transport of campers to other medical facility when health needs arise, as well as the transport of lab specimens to appropriate lab facilities.
      • Communicate with Caregiver regarding the health and care of their child.  
      • When needed, in support of campers and families, provide personal care to campers who require assistance with the activities of daily living.
    • Act as a health care resource for staff and volunteers, answers questions and provide in-services throughout the camp program.
    • Communicate with all relevant camp staff concerning camper’s diagnosis, care, and treatment to ensure all campers are provided a healthy and safe environment.
    • Provide supervision and guidance to medical volunteers as assigned.
  • Prepares and distributes medical supplies to program areas and cabins (First Aid kits, backboards etc.)
  • Adhere to standard and universal precautions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Certification training for preferred qualifications will be offered within the first year of employment.

  • Valid WA State Registered Nurse license or Compact license valid in WA state.
  • CPR / AED Certification.
  • PALS certification.
  • BLS instructor certification, preferred.
  • ARNP license, a plus and DEA license, a plus.
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification, preferred.

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years clinical Pediatric Nursing experience.
    • Pediatric ICU or ER. Preferred.
  • Clinical proficiency with medical procedures, equipment, protocols used at camp (IV access, central venous and port access, G-tubes, and pumps).
  • Professional nursing experience with children ages 4-17.
  • Teaching experience, preferred.
  • Camp experience preferred, and even better if it was at a SeriousFun or other specialized camp!
  • Life or professional experience with individuals with terminal or life-altering medical conditions, preferred.
  • Communication capability in multiple languages, preferred.

COMPENSATION:

Salary Range:

$80,000-95,000 DOE
