Job Title:  Education & Community Engagement Coordinator

Department:  Education & Community Engagement

Reports to:  Education Manager

Status:  Full-time, non-exempt

Compensation:  40,000 - $46,000 annually
 

Summary:

The Education & Community Engagement Coordinator plays a vital role in advancing the Houston Symphony’s mission to provide students across Greater Houston with access to high-quality musical experiences that inspire lifelong engagement with music. As the primary liaison for 300–500 schools participating in the Student Concert Series, the Coordinator works with the Education Manager to facilitate all aspects of communication and logistics. This role also leads the development and coordination of teacher resources to enhance classroom learning before and after the concerts and serves as project manager for Family Concert lobby activities and Senior Center partnerships. Additionally, the Coordinator provides essential administrative support to the Education and Community Engagement (EdCE) department, including preparing board meeting materials, coordinating with internal departments, and managing logistics for Symphony and Community-Embedded Musicians working in schools and community settings.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Student Concert and School Partnerships Administration
    Support and expand the Houston Symphony’s reach and impact on Houston-area students by:
    • Managing registration for schools attending the Harry & Cora Sue Mach Student Concert Series, including maintaining forms and wait-lists, entering orders in Tessitura, tracking documentation and processing payments.
    • Maintaining and updating email distribution lists in Excel.
    • Preparing and sending seating assignments and detailed day-of arrival instructions to participating schools.
    • Designing concert-related trivia and activity slides for display before and after concerts.
    • Preparing printed materials, chaperone information, and signage for concerts.
    • Providing on-site support during concerts, including distribution of radios, signage, and directing volunteers and officers.
    • Support Education Manager with coordinating activities for School Partnerships & Early Childhood Programming as needed.
  • Project Management for Education & Community Engagement programs
    Lead the planning, coordination and implementation of key EdCE programs that connect audiences with music and Houston Symphony musicians:
    • Student Concert Teacher Resources: Manage the development of engaging, curriculum-aligned materials to help Upper-Elementary and Middle School students connect with the concert and performers.
    • Family Concert Lobby Activities: Coordinate interactive lobby experiences, collaborating across departments, and managing external facilitators and participating groups.
    • Senior Center Partnerships: Manage logistics for 30-60 performances throughout the season, including scheduling, communication to partners, and day-of coordination for musicians.
  • Education & Community Engagement Department Support
    Support a positive, collaborative, and productive work environment by assisting with departmental operations and cross-departmental collaboration:
    • Provide administrative support for departmental meetings, board committees, and Leadership Councils, including organizing logistics, refreshments, taking minutes, and participant communication.
    • Facilitate budget-related tasks, such as routing invoices and receipts for approval and payment and supporting reporting needs.
    • Serve as liaison to the Development department to coordinate donor cultivation observations through EdCE programs.
    • Provide general administrative support and assist with youth-focused Symphony concerts and events as needed.
    • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Collaborative, optimistic, and team-oriented attitude
  • 2–3 years of high-level project management experience, including demonstrated success coordinating with large numbers of stakeholders and managing complex logistical planning
  • Strong customer service skills, with effective verbal and written communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working with diverse internal and external partners
  • Proactive, highly organized, and detail-oriented work style
  • Experience or background in classical music
  • Passion for and knowledge of music education strategies; classroom experience preferred
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office, including advanced functions in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly; experience with Tessitura is a plus
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (arts administration, business administration, music education or performance) required.
