The Job at a Glance

The Bankruptcy Specialist supports the Legal Operations Department by assisting with the daily handling of bankruptcy cases. This role is focused on data entry, document processing, account tracking, and communication with internal teams, attorneys, trustees, and credit union members. The position requires accuracy, organization, and the ability to follow established procedures.

 

A Typical Day

  • Reviews and processes daily bankruptcy notifications and updates systems such as Temenos and the credit union’s core system.
  • Maintains accurate records for all bankruptcy accounts, including payments and court filings.
  • Monitors bankruptcy queues in Temenos to make sure items are completed on time.
  • Accurately posts and monitors payments received from bankruptcy trustees and members in accordance with approved bankruptcy repayment plans. Regularly reviews accounts to identify any missed, partial, or late payments, and promptly escalates issues for further action.
  • Communicates with branches, members, attorneys, and trustees by phone, email, and mail to address questions or updates.
  • Uses PACER to check the status of bankruptcy cases and enter updates into tracking systems.
  • Keeps spreadsheets updated to track open bankruptcy cases and provides status updates when needed.
  • Collects documents to help prepare and file bankruptcy forms (such as Proofs of Claim and Reaffirmation Agreements).
  • Supports coordination with outside legal counsel for complex filings or motions.
  • Help tracks insurance coverage for vehicles and property on bankruptcy accounts; follows up with members or their attorneys as needed.
  • Reviews Chapter 13 plans and reports any concerns to Bankruptcy Paralegal or VP of Legal Operations.
  • Reviews lien releases requests and account updates after a bankruptcy discharge.
  • Follows bankruptcy rules and credit union procedures in daily work.
  • Provides excellent service to members and works cooperatively with coworkers and other departments.
  • Develops working knowledge of other Legal Operations functions to provide backup support and ensure continuity of service when needed.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for process improvement and recommends solutions to enhance departmental efficiency.
  • Adheres to all credit union policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

What We Look For

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Paralegal Certificate or minimum of 2 years’ Bankruptcy experience preferred, and/or 2 years of Credit Union experience preferred. Will accept any suitable combination of education, experience and/or training.
