Job Description & Duties:

The Machine Room Laborer plays a critical role in supporting the safe and efficient operation of the #3 Paper Machine, with a primary focus on the dry end and winder areas. This position works closely with the Winder Operator and other team members to ensure smooth production flow, effective equipment operation, and overall product quality. This list is not all-inclusive and additional duties may be assigned based on workload and operational needs.

  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Follow all mill safety rules and procedures.
    • Check every roll transport for proper safety equipment and maintain an accurate sign-off log of this confirmation.
  • Equipment Operation & Process Control:
    • Assess the day by reading the production log schedule and cutting cores accordingly.
    • Assist in the transfer of finished paper reel from the paper machine to the winder.
    • Properly thread the winder with the help of the Winder Operator.
    • Assist with paper machine startups and the paper threading process.
    • Ensure proper production specifications through accurate setup of winder slitters and saw adjustments.
    • Remove defects from the finished roll and prepare for transport to the finishing or furnish prep department via tug.
    • Unload rolls in the finishing department by removing from tug and placing them on the conveyor.
  • Quality Control & Record-Keeping:
    • Collect paper test sheets for quality control in the lab.
    • Cut cores to exact order size, verifying measurements with a tape measure to confirm core specifications for each production run.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
    • Complete daily tug inspection ensuring the equipment is in working order and charging as needed.
    • Keep machine room and basement areas clean by sweeping, hosing, and removing scrap paper.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment required.
  • Experience with forklift or tug operation preferred.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and work effectively in a high-speed production environment.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative in supporting production needs.

 

Work Environment:

  • Work in a production facility exposed to extreme heat and humidity.
  • Exposure to load noise, moving machienery, and wet surfaces.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, and opering equipment for extended periods.
  • Requires lifting, pushing, and pulling materials up to 50lbs.
  • Shift work required, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
