Position Summary
We are seeking a highly capable and product-driven GCS Systems Manager to lead the design and development of our Ground Control Station (GCS) software, with a focus on Teal Settings, user interface and experience (UI/UX), and Android application development. This role sits at the intersection of mission-critical usability and technical execution—managing the frontend user experience that enables pilots and operators to control drones with precision, safety, and confidence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Team & Technical Leadership
- Lead and manage a team of Android and UI/UX software engineers building and maintaining GCS applications for UAV platforms.
- Own the roadmap, architecture, and feature set for Teal Settings and related configuration tools.
- Translate customer feedback, flight operations needs, and hardware capabilities into intuitive, responsive user experiences.
- UI/UX Design & Implementation
- Oversee the design and implementation of modern, operator-friendly interfaces that support:
- Real-time telemetry
- Flight controls and camera views
- System health monitoring
- Teal Settings customization and configuration workflows
- Work closely with designers to ensure consistency, responsiveness, and mission-centric UX patterns across GCS apps.
- Android Development
- Manage the development of native Android apps that serve as primary control stations for Teal drone platforms.
- Oversee integration with hardware controllers, video feeds, mission planners, and OTA configuration tools.
- Ensure smooth performance, stability, and compliance with Android system services and hardware abstraction layers.
- Settings & Config Systems
- Define and manage Teal Settings architecture for configuring flight modes, radio settings, payload options, and system preferences.
- Ensure backward compatibility and robust error handling across firmware versions and drone SKUs.
- Coordinate with embedded teams to align app-based settings with onboard behavior.
- Integration & Testing
- Own release cycles, CI/CD pipelines, and QA coordination for all GCS software builds.
- Conduct hands-on integration with flight hardware and support live testing, operator feedback loops, and rapid iteration.
- Implement telemetry logging, crash reporting, and analytics for performance monitoring.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in mobile application development, with a strong focus on Android (Kotlin/Java).
- 2+ years in a technical leadership or managerial role overseeing software development teams.
- Proven experience with modern UI/UX frameworks and best practices (Jetpack Compose, MVVM, Material Design).
- Strong understanding of GCS applications, mission control software, or UAV operator workflows.
- Familiarity with telemetry protocols, MAVLink, RTSP video integration, or Android-native video handling.
Additional Desired Qualifications
- Experience with drone, robotics, or aviation ground control interfaces.
- Familiarity with embedded/firmware systems and settings sync across hardware/software boundaries.
- Understanding of DoD/enterprise compliance requirements for mobile and field-deployed applications.
- Exposure to Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile (KMM), Jetpack Compose, or WebView/React integrations in Android.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Hybrid of UI design, mobile development, and live hardware testing.
- Fast-paced product cycles with close interaction with flight ops, QA, autonomy, and customer teams.
- Occasional travel for flight testing, customer demos, and feedback sessions.
