MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School diploma, driver’s license
Substitution for Education: None
Experience: One year of successful work experience as a certified nursing assistant, medical office manager or related work experience.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Medical Assistant is responsible for contributing to the optimal health and safety of Abilis residents by (a) scheduling and facilitating residents’ medical appointments per established policies and interdisciplinary team recommendations, and (b) completing other forms of Health Services and Administrative supports as assigned.
A. KEY AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY: Medical Appointments.
Specific Duties: Responsible for participants as follows:
- Track necessary medical appointments as indicated on residents’ Medical information Forms, Consultation forms per established policies and procedures, and/or per the request of Abilis nurses and residential management staff, and schedule and conduct appointments accordingly.
- At completion of medical appointments, the medical Specialist is responsible for follow-up, faxing prescription order to pharmacy, copying and scanning all paperwork (CF, med order) and send to Health Services Director and residential nurses and residence staff. Scanning of Consultation forms (CF) - attach it to an email to the house RN when there is a new medication order. Follow it up with a call so that RN’s can be sure the medication is received.
- New Lab order: Document if labs were drawn or need to be on CF for proper follow through.
- Follow-up phone calls to staff regarding prescription for medical appointment the night before or in AM and document advised.
- Coordinate all admissions for procedure under anesthesia at hospitals at the time frame required (include all labs, medical clearance and faxing paperwork to hospital).
- Follow-up calls to doctors and offices pertaining to patient care.
- Accompany residents on medical appointments, providing transportation in keeping with Abilis vehicle and driving policies and procedures, providing support to residents in keeping with their overall plans of service – particularly regarding levels of supervision and necessary medical and behavioral interventions, and assisting residents to communicate with residents in ways which promote each resident’s fullest degree of independence, respect and dignity and accuracy of medical information.
- Printing out Consultation forms (CF) and asking MD to complete it at doctor’s appointments. If documents printed with specific data regarding appt. (i.e. Print out of AP) received, ensure that also is scanned to the house RN.
- Ensure appropriate completion, follow-up and filing of CF before and after medical appointments per established policies and procedures.
- Using the Therap monthly medical appointment calendar: coordinate with Medical Specialist & determine a plan for the month ahead of time based on the schedule so that it is clear who is taking who to medical appts. one week prior to and one week following each month.
B. KEY AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY: Health Services, Residential Services and Administrative support.
Specific Duties:
- Administration of medications to Abilis participants as needed.
- As assigned by the director of health Services or designee, performs other duties in support of Health Services, Residential Services or Administrative departments. An example of this activity includes clerical tasks within the Health Services department such as tracking appointments.
