The Camp Director plays a crucial role in ensuring a fun, safe, and unforgettable summer camp experience for participants and staff alike. Tasked with planning, preparing, and implementing engaging daily activities, the director adheres to Bensenville Park District policies, rules, and procedures, while also overseeing all camp operations. With a focus on developing a well-rounded camp curriculum, the director tailors’ activities to suit the diverse needs and interests of campers, fostering an inclusive environment that encourages growth, teamwork, and adventure throughout the camp season.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee daily operations of Summer Camps to ensure smooth functioning and compliance with protocols.
  • Actively supervise camp staff, ensuring adherence to safety practices and proper procedures.
  • Create staff schedules, manage substitutions, and assign specific responsibilities and activities.
  • Collaborate with Recreation Supervisor and Lead Counselors to establish opening and closing day procedures.
  • Create and manage daily routines, schedules, and procedures for Day Camp operations.
  • Assist in purchasing, distributing, and maintaining inventory of camp supplies and materials.
  • Plan and coordinate special events and themed activities to enhance camper experience.
  • Conduct weekly staff meetings to communicate updates, provide training, and address concerns.
  • Organize and supervise weekly field trips, including logistics for supplies, transportation, and crisis management.
  • Maintain accurate records and evaluations for camp programs, staff performance, and facility operations.
  • Monitor safety measures and procedures to ensure the well-being of campers and staff at all times.
  • Foster a positive camp environment to promote good morale and well-being within the camp community.
  • Communicate safety regulations and emergency procedures clearly to staff, ensuring they understand and can act accordingly.
  • Observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, and apply effective behavior management techniques as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one-year college education. Working towards a degree in Recreation Administration, Education, or related field is preferred
  • Minimum two years of experience working in a camp setting with youth
  • Excellent skills in planning activities for children
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with children, parents, and staff
  • Ability to solve problems that may arise
  • Must be energetic, have a positive attitude, and be encouraging
  • Ability to enforce Park District rules and safety practices
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Certified in CPR/AED and First Aid is required
