Job Description Summary:
The Fisher College Police Department is actively seeking a sergeant, a pivotal role that supports the college's overall mission and provides security and related public safety services for the protection of Fisher College, students, staff, visitors, and assets.
The Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising personnel of equal or lesser rank and is involved in a wide range of duties, including planning, assigning, and directing the activities of subordinates. The Sergeant also plays a key role in monitoring and evaluating the performance of subordinates and provides written documentation that meets the requirements of Fisher College’s formal evaluation process.
Generally working under the supervision of the Administrative Lieutenant, the Sergeant shall have immediate control of the personnel under their command and shall be held strictly accountable for their efficiency, effectiveness, discipline, appearance, and overall conduct to ensure appropriate enforcement and compliance with the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the policies, procedures, and regulations of Fisher College, consistent with the interests of protecting the lives and property of the members of the Fisher College community. In the absence of any superior officer, the Sergeant shall assume complete charge of the department until otherwise relieved by a higher authority.
The Sergeant must be adaptable and ready to work any shift, including nights, weekends, and overtime as assigned. The department operates on a “five days on, two days off” schedule, balancing work and personal life.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act, an individual to whom students and employees should report criminal offenses or who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities. A CSA shall report all allegations of Clery Act crimes they receive to the Public Safety Department so they may be investigated and published in the College’s Annual Security and Fire Report. Description of Duties and Responsibilities:
The statement below describes the principal duties of the Sergeant and is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties and responsibilities:
- Maintains total familiarity with all applicable laws and the policies and procedures of the Fisher College Police Department and with the rules and regulations of Fisher College. Shall assist and instruct personnel under their command in adequately performing their duties, giving special attention to new officers serving in the department or reassigned to a new shift.
- Responsible for maintaining records, logs, and files; reports in writing to a superior officer any cases of misconduct, incompetence, neglect of duty, or violation of Fisher College rules and regulations or Fisher College Police Department policies and procedures on the part of such personnel.
- Responsible for patrolling the campus regularly and visiting with each person assigned to their shift as often as practical to ensure efficient and effective performance.
- Review and sign written reports submitted by subordinates, accepting responsibility for their completeness, correctness, and accuracy.
- Respond to or provide backup assistance on all potential disturbances and emergency calls.
- Act as a resource for Officers and Public Safety Officers under their immediate supervision and guide other supervisors regarding staff responsibilities as may be assigned.
- Identifies the need to follow up written incident reports by coordinating follow-up investigations with the initial officer or others.
- Investigate and document all accidents in which on-duty members of the Fisher College Police Department are involved.
- Actively involved in carrying out Crime Prevention and Community Policing programs.
- Acts as a member of the supervisory and management team of the Fisher College Police Department and, as such, is expected to devote themselves to promoting the fulfillment of the department's mission and values among those they supervise and serve.
- Provide first responder medical assistance and direct advanced medical personnel as necessary.
- Assists those in need and has the knowledge and ability to make referrals to applicable campus resources.
- Authors ' well-written and highly detailed incident reports.
- Demonstrates the ability to analyze emergencies and quickly develop incident action plans to mitigate such incidents.
- Works in collaboration with the Dean of Students' office when incidents are referred for judicial considerations.
- Provide information to the general public and community members while promoting positive police-community relations.
- Works closely with municipal police and fire agencies, as well as the local public, to foster a cooperative and coordinated effort in matters of campus safety and security.
- Works closely with the community to enhance public safety at Fisher College, with specific emphasis on crime prevention and awareness.
- Participates in an ongoing professional development program that includes all training activities, i.e., on-the-job and in-service training initiatives.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
