JOB SUMMARY

The Area Coordinator for Upperclass Housing will work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to envision and implement a dynamic residential program for approximately 200 sophomores, juniors and seniors. In this live-in position, the Area Coordinator will serve as a supervisor, educator, counselor, and administrator.  The successful candidate will serve as a visible, active leader on campus committed to fostering a vibrant residential community characterized by an appreciation for diversity and inclusion, active involvement, and engaged learning.  They will apply knowledge of student development theory to the upperclass population in a way that encourages the students' academic, personal, and social transition to Columbia College.  The Area Coordinator will supervise an Assistant Area Coordinator, undergraduate Resident Assistants, advise our Residence Hall Association, and serve as part of the Student Affairs team with involvement in programs and events sponsored by other departments in Student Affairs, as well as relevant institutional committees.  
 

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate student staff. Directly supervise at least nine Resident Assistants.
  • Work with the Area Coordinator for the McNair First-Year Center in monitoring the actions of the desk staff and operations in three residence halls.
  • Advise the Residence Hall Association (RHA).
  • Serve on the on-call staff rotation schedule and crisis response team.
  • Provide leadership in residence hall programming designed to create a community.
  • Work collaboratively in planning and implementing programs and events, which involve faculty and administrators in living-learning experiences for students.
  • Make appropriate referrals of students with personal and/or academic issues.
  • Respond proactively to student and parent concerns.
  • Conduct mediation interventions with students in conflict as needed.
  • Engage students in the process of developing an academically and socially supportive community and addressing community issues as they arise.
  • Manage all aspects of the upperclass living environment including damage assessments, space reservations, storage, etc.
  • Adjudicate student conduct matters.
  • Work closely with campus constituents to address facilities and safety issues.
  • Conduct regular Health and Safety Inspections.
  • Successfully complete administrative assignments and tasks (i.e. submitting service requests, programming reports, etc.).
  • Serve on various campus committees.
  • Participate collaboratively in staff selection and training, the spring Room Lottery and Selection process, Orientation programs, and other large-scale processes.
  • Conduct Early Alert meetings with at risk students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education administration, counseling or closely related field; Master’s degree in higher education administration, student affairs or counseling strongly preferred.
  • Previous work experience or involvement in Residence Life or Student Affairs is strongly preferred.
  • Experience living and/or working in a multicultural college or university residence hall preferred.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to make sound judgments and think critically about issues that arise.
  • A strong interest in student development, learning, and leadership.
  • This is a live-in position.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, utilizing Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Teams.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling some of the time.  Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.
